White. That's all I see. No I'm not dead there's just a damn light shining directly in my face. Stupid light disrupting my wonderful beauty sleep. I toss and turn in bed hoping to fall back asleep. When I realize I can't, I groan, and put my pillow over my face. Slowly, and painfully, I open my eyes to see that I left my curtains open. I groan and roll over to try to hide from the blinding light.
Unfortunately, my bed is only a twin size and I roll onto the floor instead. Ow. After laying on the ground and mentally debating if it was worth getting up I finally decide to drag myself off the ground. I look at the clock and notice it's only 7:30. I usually get up at 8 but now that I'm up I won't be able to go back to sleep so I guess I'm going to take a shower.
After taking a quick shower I go to my closet and pick out my outfit. I decided on a pair of black ripped jeans, a white crop top, and my leather jacket. Simple and classic. After I get changed I head to the kitchen. I make some breakfast and look at the clock and sigh. It's only 8. I don't have to leave for another hour.
Perks of being a senior at my school is that we get the choice to start later or end earlier and who wouldn't choose to start school later especially when you're not a morning person. I set my plate on the table and go into my little sister, Maddie's room. I go in there and see Maddie already awake staring at me with wide eyes. When I walk into the room she looks up at me and waves her hands at me telling me she wants to be picked up. She's so cute. She's only 6 months old.
If you're wondering where our parents are, they passed away in a car accident a few months ago. They were driving home from their friends' wedding when a drunk driver ran a stop light and smashed right into my parents' car. The police showed up at my doorstep that night and explained what happened. They said they died on impact. I cried for weeks. I'm still not fully recovered but I'm pulling myself together for Maddie's sake. She deserves a decent adult figure in her life. Since I am 18 I gained custody of Maddie after convincing the judge that I could care for her.
All the money that my parents had was automatically given to me. My mom was a lawyer and one of the best at that. She told me she had only lost 5 cases in her entire career. My dad was also a lawyer. Just not as good as mom, but you didn't hear that from me. My parents actually met in law school and had been together ever since. This of course meant that we had money. My parents firmly believed in raising us to be humble and grateful for everything that we had. So unlike the other wealthy families in the neighborhood Maddie and I were not completely spoiled. Sure we got nice presents for holidays but we didn't get everything with a snap of the fingers.
Thanks to my parents teaching me to budget I estimated that I could support Maddie and I easily for 10 years if I took care of our money. When I showed the judge by financial statements and budgeting plan it was easier to convince him that I was capable of being Maddie's primary caretaker.
I picked up Maddie and took her to the kitchen to warm her up a bottle. "Good morning sunshine! Did you have a good sleep?" I've been really grateful that she sleeps through the night. As the bottle was warming up I quickly made myself some bacon and eggs. Once I was done, I went to the table and fed her.
After we both finished eating I put our dishes in the sink, grabbed my backpack and placed her in her playpen in the living room. I hear the doorbell ring and I go to answer it. It was Claire and her mom. Claire has been my best friend since diapers. Her mom knows my situation and since she can work from home she watches Maddie while I'm at school. I've offered to pay her but every time she turns it down claiming that Maddie and I were basically family and you never need to pay family.
"Hi Claire. Hi Aunt Stella." "Hey Liz! Let's go or we're going to be late. Dani and Jess are already outside." Dani and Jess were our friends that we made in freshman year. We were forced to do an english project together and after that the four of us were inseparable. "Ok. Oh Maddie's in the living room and I'll be back by 4. We have practice after school," I ramble while putting on my combat boots. I quickly run into the living room and kiss Maddie goodbye. Ever since the accident I never leave without saying goodbye.
"Ok. That's fine dear. Study hard and have fun." I yell 'bye' while running out the door. I hop on my motorcycle and see my girls on theirs too. After nodding at them we all put on our helmets, start our engines and take off.
Oh how forgetful of me. If you haven't figured it out my name is Elizabeth but I go by Liz, welcome to my life.
