Chapter 2:

“Marianne!” A female voice called from the door as my aunt walked towards it.

“Susan!” she replied, and they quickly hugged and kissed each others’ cheeks. I laughed quietly at the gesture.

Then the young boy walked in, and I almost dropped the plate in my hand.

He was absolutely gorgeous. He had dirty blonde hair that was playfully spiked up, but it still looked mature. His eyes were deep blue, like sapphire, my birth stone. But there was something strange in his eyes; they were very wide open… almost like he just got off a crazy roller coaster or something. His face was very masculine; his jaw was prominent through his skin. He was wearing a white t-shirt that clung to his muscular body. He was also tan and quite tall.

I didn’t even realize my mouth was open until I closed it, and his eyes met mine for a second before he quickly looked away. I sped walked into the formal dining area.

I put the plates on the table in a fluster. How could this boy be so beautiful? Was my aunt punishing me for something by forcing me to meet him? But I knew the answer was no, my aunt would never do that.

I peered out the doorway to the formal dining room and “Kyle” was perched on the arm of the blue couch watching the baseball game that was playing on the huge flat screen TV. My eyes widened when his eyes met mine and I walked out of the dining room at a fast pace.

“Mia!” I heard my aunt call from where she stood with Susan and Kyle, “come say hi, honey! I’ll finish setting up the table.”

I squeezed my eyes shut. Really. Was she doing this on purpose? Or did she actually think I was looking forward to meeting some random –very cute- boy. I sighed quickly and turned around to walk towards where the strangers were standing by the door. As I stepped down the small step to the sunken living room I did something that I will probably never let myself live down.

I fell, on my face.

Kyle burst out laughing and his hand flew to his mouth. I felt my face flush bright red as I started to hoist myself up.

“Are you alright?” Kyle said with laughter in his voice. He walked towards me and put out his hand to help me up.

“Uh… yeah. I think so,” I gave him my hand and he pulled me up with ease. I looked away from him and blushed.

“Hello Mia!” Susan said to me, “we have heard a lot about you!”

I heard my aunt laugh from the kitchen where she was busy setting the table. I was flattered that she spoke to her friends about me. I awkwardly shifted my feet and did not know what to say in the presence of this boy. Susan excused herself and went to go talk to my aunt who was now in the formal dining room.

I pulled out my phone in attempt to make the situation less awkward since neither Kyle nor me was speaking. Kyle just stared at me with his wild eyes that contained something I still couldn’t put my finger on.

“May I?” Kyle suddenly spoke, lifting his hand towards my phone.

I was confused. “Um, sure,” I handed him my phone. He took it and typed something into it and gave it back to me. He had added himself as a contact. Why? All I was doing was making it awkward by standing there in front of him looking at my phone. I stared at the screen with a puzzled expression.
