There are a lot of creepers.

I learn this when an entire fucking heard of the things start following us.

Actually it isn't a heard. It's much more massive then that- there are hundreds.

Just as things start going right, everything goes wrong again. Hell, Anna and I were getting along, for once.

But before we get to the end, I would like to start this out yeaterday.

We rode through a north Oklahoma town in the blazing heat, which I'm pretty sure is one of the circles of hell.

On the brightside, there was a gunshop there, with one gun in it. It must have been the lonliest gun ever, but I took it anyway. It had eight rounds in it, two of which will get wasted in a very short peiod of time.

That was all great, even if we couldn't find jack shit anywhere else.

But that was when I noticed that we where being tailed. I doubt that I ever saw it- and it would've been all great if my psycic hoodoo crap warned me, but it didn't. Thank you brain.

But there was this something that came over me. It was way byond dred, or fear, and maybe even emotion. I couldn't identify it then, but I think I get it now.

Anyway, I started to get worried when the sun ws highest in the sky. It was almost too hot for words, and Anna suggested we stop.

I told her that we couldn't, because A. We didn't have any food, and we needed to make it to the next town to find some of that, and B. Because-I-Said-So-And-I'm-Older-And-Have-Longer-Hair-And-I'm-The-One-Driving-Anyway.

She hardly even arged, bless her soul.

Well, she did poke me in the eyes, nearly running me into a cow, but it was an imporovement.

Then, the nightmare started.

Because the car ran out of coolent, and it's not exactly like we had water to waste.

So I had to leave her pretty ass behind, and go on foot, which for the record, sucked. But we just kept trekking alone, like we always had.

Because if anything in this life, it's that if you don't keep going, you're not going to go at all.

That is the most insparational thing I think I've ever said.

But it's true.

I kept on trekking when I thought my friends dead; I kept on tekking when I was torn from everything that I loved; I kept on tekking after a gunshot wound to the chest; I kept on trekking when it was all torn from me again. It's what I do.

Maybe it's my one strength. That and my amazing good looks.

The first creepers caught up to us there, wich is when I took those first two shots.

The nice thing abiut the creepers is the fact that they're like humans in amny respects, like the fact that you don't have to shoot them directly in the head in order for them to die.

So I killed two.

We couldn't run fast enough.

I knew it, I knew it all along. I was dead before this whole affair even started, and I should've never thought myself above any of it.

We came to the edge of the highway; not far off an endless expance of wheat leads into the distance. Safety.

I’m running so hard that I have to pick up Anna to get along.

But they’re so fast, and I know we’re not going to make it to the cornfield. I set Anna back down, only eight large strides from safety.

“Anna, I need you to run. Run as fast as you can into that field. You got me?” She nods, turning. “And take this, too. It’s got six rounds in it, don’t waste.” I shout, tossing her the 45. She catches it, and the runs. I put myself deliberately in front of her. I yank out the Mossberg, and begin firing off. They’re so close that I can it every single one with perfect precision. It can’t be enough.

I hear the sound of cornhusks cracking and bending, and I know she’s safe.

My baby is safe.
