I kept my head down, joining the endless stream of people on the way to the sea of stars. There were numerous reasons why we travel among the stars. Mostly it was for business and employment. Few people do it for leisure these days. It seems that the more we evolve as a species, the more we treasure the Now. Granted, the military doesn't think the same way that I do, but they have a expansive role to play, and I have my own role to consider as well.
I scanned my palm print against the isometric scanner, wincing as the laser ate some skin off my palm for the DNA test as well. I watched the holographic advertisement of the latest sim game. Games these days were getting more realistic than real life, I discovered. Someone jostled me from behind. I looked back, slightly irritated. It was a woman, too engrossed with her cell to notice. The cell zombies, Sigmund had jokingly referenced these people to be walking dead deeply involved in technology then to see the beauty of nature around them.
I respect Sigmund, but these days, our cities are constructs of steel and glass, and the only natural environment are artificially created and housed in green belts. That aside, being nearer to space has always made me happier. My job does not involve going to space or traveling among the stars, so I could only come here during my holiday period.
The shuttles have artificial gravity generators, but once we left the shuttle and in transit to the next station, I could indulge in my free floating happiness. Yes, I liked to play in the zero gravity environment. The happiness I get from it was almost enough to make me forget about the attempt on my life.
