Kate and Dina have been friends for about year now. Summer is over, school is about to start.
Dina was getting her bag ready for her year of 9th grade. She couldn't wait to see Kate again! She looked at the time: 7:50. It was time to go. Dina finished packing quickly, then went downstairs to grab a bite. She took a piece of bread and a glass of orange juice. Then, she said bye to her parents, and set off to her first day of school. Having arrived at the doors, she was pleased to see Kate, who hadn't changed a bit. She still had her hair covering her face, still had a serene look, and still had the same calm smile. She walked up to her and hugged her.
"It's really good to see you again! Did you have a nice summer?" said Dina.
"Yes I did! I hope you didn't almost get run over again."
"No worries." answered Dina with a laugh.
"I read the class list, and apparently there's a new kid. The worst part is that I don't know if it's a guy or girl. His-- Her-- THEIR-- name is Blaire Caser."
"Huh. I guess we'll find out. The bell just rang. Let's go."
They walked into the school, and went to the class they were assigned to. When they entered the room, the three middle seats were open. They took two of them, leaving the one next to Dina empty. When class started, a girl walked into the room. You could only see that by the fact that she actually had boobs. Other thank that, she wore jeans, combat boots, one of those wallet chains, and a band t-shirt. Another fact that didn't help was the fact that half her head as shaved. She had a part on her right side, and all the right side was shaved. A little bit of the left too, but the longish hair covered it. She had a black backpack on one shoulder, and she had her hands in her pocket. She slouched a little bit, but not enough to look lazy. She still managed looked strong.
The teacher spoke. "Everyone, welcome your new friend: Blaire Caser. I hope she will be treated kindly."
Dina and Kate exchanged a glance that said Holy crap that's the new kid? And of course, the only empty spot was next to Dina. Blaire sat down. Dina gave her a friendly glance, and she responded in kind. Dina noticed that her face said "strong, confident, and brave", but her eyes had a damaged feel to them.
Dina whispered, "Hey. I'm Dina."
"Dina!" said the teacher. Dina jumped, and straightened up.
"Yes, Mr Casburg?" she said, he heart pounding.
"I appreciate your trying to socialize with Miss Caser, but please save that for the breaks."
"Yes Mr Casburg. I apologize." She looked back at Blaire. She was looking at her paper, but Dina could see she was suppressing a smile.
When class ended, Dina went searching for Blaire. As she was walking down the main hallway, a black figure caught her eye. She looked closer, and saw a half shaved head head out the door. She sprinted after it, and grabbed her shoulder. Blaire jumped and turned around, in a battle stance. Dina's heart broke when she saw that Blaire's eyes were glassy and teary.
"Oh my god Blaire, I'm so sorry, I didn't mean to hurt you or scare you or--"
"Stop. It's not your fault. I just... I have to go." She started to walk away when Dina grabbed her hand.
"It's not good to go home angry. Trust me, I know that. I know we haven't really met, but you can tell me what happened to you."
Blaire looked at Dina longly, her lips quivering slightly. Dina put a hand on her shoulder and the floodgates opened. Blaire grabbed onto Dina, and cried in her shoulder. Dina gently shushed her, tried to calm her, and lead her to a small patch of grass behind the school.
