"Shit!" I felt a pair of strong arms wrap around me protectively, Terrance's. He pushed me behind him, so I was sandwiched between him and Carly. I took a glance over his tall shoulder, having to stand on my tip-toes to look.
"Get down, we don't know what did that to your door," murmured Carly as she put a hand on my shoulder and gently forces me to stand at my usual short height.
I shot her a glance of protest, grunting and crossing my arms over my chest. "Terrance what is it?" I hissed demandingly.
"Uh .. Hello?" A female voice called from down the stairs. "Sorry about your door. We sort of just meant to gently push it open.."
Terrance seemed to physically relax and be let out a huff. "Oh thank the Moon Goddess," he mumbled, slumping in relief. "It's just the Elementals."
"The Elementals?" I inquired, stepping out from behind Terrance and climbing down the stairs. When I did, I spotted a group of people maybe a tad bit older than me. She had flaming red-brown auburn hair and icy blue eyes, a heavily freckled face, and a raised eyebrow.
"Sorry about the door," the girl repeated sheepishly, scratching the back of her neck and glancing back at her friends, who didn't seem sorry at all. "Um .. We saw movement inside, and they kinda dared me to make an entrance."
"Well done," I praised, trying to hold back amused laughter as I smiled at the group of people behind the girl. "You managed to make a ten on my scale. But you broke my door, so I may knock a few points down."
"Oh come on," an amber-eyed and black haired girl said, playfully scowling. "That was at least a twenty."
"What Mai said," a blonde haired tall guy agreed, patting Mai's shoulder.
"Don't touch me."
"Sorry." He slowly released her shoulder and let his hand rest at his side.
"Anyways.." The redhead looked up at me again, curious. "I'm Esme Queens."
"Faye," I responded, tilting my head at her and walking down the stairs. We shook hands. "I'm assuming you're all the Elementals everyone's been saying are coming?"
"Only some of them," she told me, glancing behind her and shrugging her shoulders and cocking her head. "I'm assuming you're a dragon rider?"
"I am," I confirmed, tapping my fingers against the brown wooden railing. I was glad I was doing it, because if not for the tapping filling the room there would be a major awkward silence within the air.
"You're pretty .. Chubby .." Stated one of the guys bluntly, causing a girl who looked strikingly like him to elbow his ribs. "Ow! Casey, what the hell?"
"Maybe you should keep your mouth shut, then, Tanner," the girl, Casey, snapped at her male look alike. "You can't just flat out tell people that. It's rude!"
"I'm just stating the truth.."
I would have usually found the statement Tanner said to be offensive, but considering that I am growing I laughed. "Guys it's fine. I'm just pregnant."
"You're pretty young to be pregnant," Esme told me, furrowing her eyebrows and glancing curiously towards my stomach.
"Thanks," I replied dryly, snorting softly. "Anyways," I continued, wanting to change the subject, "are you guys looking for someone in particular, or..?"
Usually Dragon's Cove, the only known place in the world that is a safe haven for dragons and their riders alike, is closed off to outside species and non-riders. But the leaders of Hovers have banded together to briefly open the Cove to our allies, the ones who will fight on our side in the war.
This explains how other species are able to get in. One has to be welcomed agreed to enter so to speak, by the heads of at least ten Hovers when it's a matter related to one such as this. Lucy managed to be welcomed in because she abandoned her Slayer heritage and chose the Riders instead. That was pretty admirable to my parents and some other higher ups.
The thing about Lucy, though, is that her family is screwed up. Her mother is the adopted sister of my mom, and while snooping through Lucy's old house we found a Dragon Rider's handbook. When my mom explained everything to me, she said that at the time during when she and her adopted sister were trying to find their dragons, my grandparents never explained to her until much later that she would never become a dragon rider. She didn't have the magic in her blood.
How, then, did Lucy get a dragon? If she supposedly didn't have magic in her blood, then it shouldn't be possible. Unless, of course, her father did. It's a possibility, but Lucy and I have never discussed it. It's honestly the last things on our minds.
Esme was talking, followed by the familiar voice of Carley. Snapping from my thoughts I looked from Esme's crew to Terrance and Carley, who had joined me at some point during my train of thought.
"You blanked out," Carley said, turning her attention to me and tilting the corner of her lips up in a ghost smile. "You okay?"
"Yes, sorry," I apologized, smiling sheepishly and puffing a breath of air from my mouth. "Bad habit. What were you guys saying?" I asked.
"We were told by some people to come to this house," Esme said to us, blinking. "We're to ask for Carol and Tom Foreigner," she added then.
"They're my parents," I said, waving them forward and brushing around Terrance, starting down the hall. "Come on, they should be in their meeting room. They're in there a lot these days."
"Must get tiring," the redhead behind me mused as she and her friends followed me, their footsteps heavy on the wooden floors.
"For who? Them?" I shot back, not meaning to sound sharp or challenging but unable to help the tone of my voice. I swallowed and turned my head to give her an apologetic smile. "Uh .. Sorry."
"It's okay," she laughed. "No I meant for you. Is it tiring for you?"
"I guess. I never really see my husband anymore, or my parents. It's stressful on them, but it's hard on me not being able to see them." I knocked on the door and opened it for them, not looking at anyone inside. "Go on in."
I shut the door after the new arrivals disappeared inside.
