***people wanted a sequel to Zombie...I hope you can deal with the prequel instead***
Mist hung thick over the smooth green lawn of a large Victorian era house. The dawn sun shone bravely through the fog, illuminating a young boy as he peered though, and carefully slid open the window. His dark hair was unkempt and collar length, a smattering of freckles patterned his light skin.
The house was dark and quite. All was silent and the boy swung his legs inside and closed the window quietly before lowering his dirty, bare feet to the smooth hardwood.
Silent as a shadow, he stole across the room, through the kitchen and to the back staircase. He skipped the sixth step, it creaked, and the twelfth, it was cursed, before reaching the landing. So far so good. He'd met nobody. On this floor the sounds of sleeping people could be heard. Long, deep and slow breathing, the shifting of covers and the occasional mutter of dream speech.
Fourth room down on the right side. "Reese?" The boy called in a hushed voice as he slid through the gap between the door and frame. "Reese, wake up." He climbed into the four poster bed and wormed his way under the covers and crawled up the rest his head on his friends pillow. "Reese. It's morning." He said tousling the already messy white blonde hair and blowing into his friends face.
He squinched his eyes and crinkled his nose before opening one eye to glare at the boy. "Robert....I'm sleeping." He mumbled closing his eye. He gave a sudden start and sat bolt upright, fully awake and looking horrified at his friend. "Robert! What are you-"
"Shhhh," Rob implored him, putting a finger to his lips.
"What are you doing here?" Reese said in a whisper. "What if you get caught? Nobody who isn't part of the coven can be here." He said in a strained worried voice as Rob shot him a cheeky grin.
"They won't never know, Reese. Come on, let's go before they wake up. Quick, before they give you work to do." He said flinging the covers off, dirty foot prints left behind on the sheets. Reese changed quick into a sweater and ripped jeans and together, hand in hand, they crept out of the house.
"So, you are just going to let him get away with it?" An oilily man with slick hair and wire rimmed glasses asked. He stood next to a kind looking motherly figure. Her hair was tied back, her figure pleasantly plump and her eyes, lined with age, bright. Together the two if them watched as the young boys sprinted off down the hill and into the trees.
"Oh how can you not. Look at how cute they are, Damon. Let them have fun. Poor Reese doesn't have a friend his age in this whole place." She simpered, smiling at their retreating backs. "His responsibility to this coven will happen too soon and he is so young. Give him the chance to play."
"Exactly my point. He is too young. The other boy, he doesn't belong. If you...let them play." Damon said distastefully. "He will never want to take on the job. If we teach him nothing but what he needs to know, then he won't know any different. If you let him play with this boy he will resent the coven." He breathed darkly, turning and walking away from the window.A new day dawned and the young friends had grown. Robert walked tall, his hair still collar length, but better kept, brushed at least most of the time. Reese had grown strong, though his lean frame may not show it, powerful beyond his years.
"Reese." Rob whispered, leaning against the door frame, arms crossed. He whispered it because Reese was sitting before a traced pattern on the floor, candles lit around him and incense burning slowly. "Don't mess up Reese." Robert said playfully.
The corners of Reese's lips twitched, but he staved off a smile. "Rob, I'm busy." He said slowly.
"You're always busy. Come on. They can spare you for a few hours." Robert said as his friend rose to his feet and brushed chalk off his shirt front. He made a small slash at the air and the candles extinguished themselves at once. With a slow rise of his hand the lights turned on and grew bright. At last he allowed the smile at the sight of his friend.
Rob laced their fingers and wrapped Reese's hands around himself before crushing him in a hug. Reese looked so tired. He felt him sink into the embrace, relaxing for the first time in days.
"You shouldn't be here. What if you get caught. Nobody except members of the coven." Reese warned, half-heartedly.
"You worry to much." Rob whispered against his ear, kissing it and feeling it warm with a blush. "If they turn me into a toad, you'll change me back." He snickered confidently.
"Maybe I'll just put you in a tank with a few flys and set you in the window." Reese threatened.
"Kinky?" Rob asked leaning back to look Reese in the face. They laughed before remembering they had to keep quiet and quickly stifled their snickering.
"I missed you." Reese whispered, taking Rob by the hand and peering out the room. All clear. He quickly lead him out and up the front stairs, slipping into his room and shutting the door with a snap.
"Still think we should just let them play?" Damon asked grumpily. Reese and Rob and rushed by the living room door, not even noticing the two elders sitting inside.
"Damon." The woman reprimanded.
"I think you are being far to lax. If he is to take your position next to me-"
"This conversation is over." She snapped, a cold finality in her voice. "He will sit next to you as one of the leaders of this coven if you like it or not. Until then I am in charge, and what I say goes. He will be allowed a friend, he will be allowed to be a teenager, and you will come to peace with that." She stood, firm on her feet for her age, and strode from the room.
He watched her go, bitterness and resentment filling his hollow heart. "You lost the right to tell me what to do the moment your decisions stopped being for the good of the coven and started being for him."
