I Knew It.

Matt knocks on Karen's door and a young girl, about 14 or 15 opens it. She has the same red hair and green-brown eyes as Karen.

"Hello!" He says, surprised, "Who are you? Or are you Karen but you de-aged?" The girl looks him up and down with shifty eyes. Then she slowly smiles.

"Ka-ren!" She yells over her shoulder into the flat, "Matt is here!" Karen comes into the room smiling.

"Hey!" She says.

"I brought Indian food!" Matt says, holding up the bag, "They gave me extra, which I see is a good thing!"

"Oh, yeah." Karen says, glancing at the girl, "This is my niece, Lily."

"Hello, Lily!" Matt says.

"Hello." She says, smiling and walking into the kitchen. As soon as the door swings closed Karen turns to him.

"I'm sorry, I know this is our hanging out night, but her parents really need time to work some things out and they don't want her around getting worried and my sister kind of just dropped her off twenty minutes ago with her stuff and I couldn't exactly say no...you know?"

"Oh, Kaz, it's fine." Matt says, "I mean, we're still gonna watch the crap movie, right?" Karen smiles.

"Of course!"

Lily comes back in and they divide the food to watch the movie. Lily sits on the floor with her back against the couch, giving the too-small couch to Matt and Karen, not listening to any protests. Lily provides some excellent sarcastic commentary, and Matt and Karen spend the movie laughing. At some point, Karen ends up with her head on Matt's shoulder and Matt ends up with his arm around her waist. Matt smiles to himself. He's liked Karen for years, but he doesn't have the guts to ask if she feels the same way. The movie ends and Lily gets up, turns off the TV, turns around, and smiles at them.

"How long have you been dating?" She asks. Karen sits up and Matt pulls back his arm.

"We're not..." Karen starts,

"Totally not." Matt continues,

"I mean, he's a great guy and all, but-"

"She finds me completely repulsive."

"I wouldn't say th-"

"It goes both ways." Matt says, looking at Karen, who rolls her eyes and chucks a pillow at him.

"Flirting isn't exactly the best way to convince me you're not dating." Lily says.

"Okay, Lily," Matt says, "There's nothing going on with me and Karen." I just wish there was. "I mean...look at her moonhead." Karen elbows him. "Not to mention how gangly she is."

"Gee, thanks, Matt." Karen says, crossing her arms and pouting.

"You're welcome, Gillan." He says, pushing her head.

"Again, not helping." Lily says.

"Isn't it past your bed time?" Karen asks.

"It's eight thirty."

"Early to bed, early to rise!"

"You and Matt just wanna make out!" She says as Karen pushes her out of the room.

"Wanna make this your permanent bed time while you're here?" Lily sticks her tongue out at Karen and runs down the hall.

"Sorry about that." Karen says, sitting on the couch.

"Eh, she's a bored teenager." Matt says. A bored teenager who's half right.

"It's weird though, right?"

"Oh, totally."

"I mean...us?!"

"Yeah, right?!"

"It's just...weird!"

"Completely!"

"I mean, you're a good looking guy-"

"And you're gangly repulsive moonhead Gillan!"

"Again, thanks." She says, getting up and walking into the kitchen.

"Hey, Karen!" Matt says, following her, "Come on, you know I'm kidding, right?" Karen turns, shrugs, and smiles. "Oh, Gillan." Matt says, hugging her. "You know you're gorgeous, that's why I say that stuff." Karen shrugs him off and goes back into the living room. She picks up empty Indian food cartons and plates and walks back into the kitchen. Matt takes the plates from her and starts washing them. She throws away the empty food containers and dries the dishes.

"Kazza," Matt says, "I'm completely joking when I call you repulsive."

"You said." She says, taking a plate from him. Her fingers brush his and he feels his heart jump.

"I meant it." He says.

"Hmm?" She asks, reaching up to put the plate away. Matt glances at her. Mistake. She's apparently gotten taller since she bought the shirt, and...well...

"You're absolutely gorgeous." He whispers. She looks at him, smiles, and takes the bowl that's in his hands. Fuck, did I say that out loud?

"You're not so bad looking yourself, Smithers." She says, and suddenly gets very into drying the bowl.

"Kazza..." He says, looking at her. She turns towards him. Oh my god, he is going to kiss you. He wraps his arms around her waist and pulls her in. Then there is a shattering sound and Matt lets go of her and jumps back. Karen's dropped the bowl. Fuck. She thinks, bending down to pick up the pieces. Matt gets on his knees to help her. They pick up all the big pieces and throw them away.

"It's, um, getting late, I should go." Matt says. No, don't leave, why are you leaving?!

"Oh, uh, yeah, I guess." Stupid clumsy- you were so close to kissing him and then you drop a bowl!

Matt walks to the door and Karen follows him.

"I'll call you tomorrow then?" Matt asks.

"Of course." Karen says. Matt smiles. Why don't you just kiss him now? Karen asks herself. Why don't you just kiss her now? Matt asks himself. But since they're both stupid, Matt turns and walks out of the door. As soon as it closes he slumps against it. Idiot.

As soon as the door clicks shut Karen turns and leans against it. Idiot.

Matt leans against the door for probably five minutes, but finally gets up.

Karen hears the doorknob turn and stands up, whirling around.

Matt freezes. He hadn't expected her to still be standing there. He smiles.

"He-wha-Matt?" Karen tries to arrange her thoughts into words because now his hands are around her waist and her back is against the wall and his face is coming closer and then his mouth is on her mouth and she can't even think any more so she tangles her fingers in his hair and kisses back. Eventually they have to stop because there's this thing called breathing that feels very unimportant at the moment but you know, if they don't do it they can never kiss again.

"I've waited three years for that." She breathes. He smiles.

"Four and a half."

"Wait, really?!" He nods and kisses her again.

They hear slow clapping behind them and turn around. Lily is standing in the hallway, leaning against the wall.
