Chapter 18:

I hurried down the hall trying to find Harry. I had to stop myself from smiling when I thought about my talk with Liam. Plan FWHTMLJ was working. I had to keep up the act if I really wanted to follow through with this plan. With no success of finding Harry in the hall by the bedrooms, I walked down to the kitchen to find it completely empty. Seriously, in a house full of smitten girls, you’d expect to hear at least one shrilling giggle or something.

“Where is everyone?” I thought aloud. It was dead silent – for a change – so I decided to head out to the back porch by the pool. I opened the sliding glass doors, and before I could take a single step out onto the porch, I was startled by some creature pinching my sides from behind.

“Boo!” laughed a deep, familiar voice.

“Harry!” I hit his arm, “My God you scared the cake out of me!”

“I’m sorry, Winter,” he smirked. “Just thought I’d try and loosen you up a little bit.”

“Well stop trying,” I retorted. “Where is everyone?”

“Niall and Louis just took them out to get ice cream,” he said. “I was just coming to find you. Want to walk over there?”

“What about Liam…And Zayn?” I asked, particularly more interested in the Liam part.

Harry shrugged, “Dunno. Liam stormed out of the house a few seconds ago and Zayn doesn’t eat ice cream.”

“Oh.”

“So should we—“

I cut him off, “Did Liam seem…upset when he left?”

He raised one eyebrow at me, “I guess so, but I just saw the back of his head. Why are you so interested in him anyways?”

I beamed a smile at him, “I’m not! I just don’t want him to be upset if one of the girls was mean to him.” Actually Hazza Bear, I’m quite delighted at the fact that your best friend is dying inside.

“Right,” He didn’t seem convinced, “So how about that ice cream?”

The ice cream shop was only about a five minute walk from the house. “Sure,” I sighed. I wasn’t sure I could make it five minutes alone with Harry without breaking the plan. I couldn’t stop thinking about Liam now. Harry extended his hand and, unwillingly, I took it and smiled sweetly at him. I should have seriously considered a career in acting for putting on such a good show.

We walked out the door and onto the stone path leading to the road. We had to stop walking every few seconds so the cameramen could back up and get a shot of us at the right angle.

“So,” Harry coughed awkwardly. “Were you the one talking to Liam upstairs?”

“Erm---yeah,” I said cautiously. I could see the worry in his eyes as plainly as I could see the clouds in the sky.

“Let’s say that you’re still here at the end,” he said. “And it comes down to me and Liam. Who would you choose?”

“It’s not my choice.” I said.

“Well what if it was?” he questioned, his green eyes staring deeply into mine.

“Well, it’s not, so it doesn’t matter.” Drop it, Styles.

“Seriously Winter,” he pleaded. “Just tell me who you like better. I really like you, and I signed up for this thing to find someone I love, not to get my heart broken.”

“You don’t need to worry,” I winked at him. Technically, I wasn’t lying. I didn’t say that I would have chosen Liam even if he was homeless and Harry owned seventeen boats.

Thankfully, I didn’t have to say anything else because we arrived at the ice cream stand. All of the girls, Niall and Louis were already there. Most of them already had ice cream cones in their hands, so Harry and I walked up to the counter. He ordered a mint chocolate chip in a sugar cone so I just got the same.

Before I took a bite of my ice cream, I smiled flirtatiously at Harry and shoved it into his famous face. I burst into a fit of giggles as I watched the green liquid dripping down his face.

“That’s for sneaking up on me.” I smirked, “And green is so not your colour.”

I should have expected it, but I suddenly felt a cold, green mush on my face and dripping down onto my shirt.

We laughed together as we wiped the ice cream off of our faces. I could feel the eyes of thirty envious girls digging into my back. I could see his corny smile from underneath the mess on his face.

Once we got ourselves cleaned up and were actually able to enjoy what was left of our ice cream, Riley came up to me for the first time since she was sent home on Harry’s group date.

“Hey,” she said. “Do you want to walk with us back to the house?”

I looked over at Harry and spotted the pleading ‘don’t leave me’ look on his face. I hated to admit it, but for a few seconds I actually forgot that I hated Harry. We were just goofing around so it doesn’t mean that I like liked him. I could…tolerate him.

“I’m cool,” I said. “I’ll meet you back at the house.”

Before I went to Celebrity Bachelor, Riley was my best friend and I hated Mr. Harold. Now? Well, I just rejected my best friend for Harry Styles.

Who the heck was I?
