CHAPTER EIGHT
Surprisingly, the police officer started to chuckle. He picked up his walkie-talkie and spoke into it, still chuckling.
“Officer, it’s a pair of teens.”
The voice on the other end crackled.
“Chasing kids? They decided to take a night walk, huh? Read them a lecture and leave the scolding to their mothers.”
The police man laughed and turned to Daren and Toby.
“You heard him, boys. Hop in.”
He opened the back door. Carelessly, the guys got in. Thank God the officer was in a good mood! They drove out of the skate park. The police man asked for their addresses.
“So, what’s up with breaking windows?”
“Why would you care?” laughed Toby.
The man frowned.
“You know, it’s not good breaking windows. What’s the point? You don’t want to go to jail. You guys are still kids. And the Station is a pretty scary place-”
“You don’t scare me!” snorted Daren.
“Just get me home, ok?” said Toby.
The police officer sighed. He pulled in the drive way of Toby’s house.
“I don’t see any cars. Is anyone home?”
“Yeah, my mom,” mumbled Toby. He scrambled out of the car and walked into the house.
Daren rode with the police officer in silence but the man interrupted it.
“By the way, what’s your name?”
To his own surprise, he answered.
“Daren.”
“Really! Tell me please, why’d you guys hung around that gas station?”
Daren shrugged.
“We were hanging around. You said it yourself.”
“Yeah, yeah. Uh, Daren? Why do you hang out with those guys?”
Daren looked at the police man in the rearview mirror.
“Why do you ask so much lame questions?”
“Well isn’t your dad Mr. Coles? He is popular around here and even out of town. I never knew someone so honored and favored by so much people, can have a son that…… ”
Daren was furious.
“What did you think?! His son is a geeky, good two-shoe! And wears ties and glasses? Sorry to disappoint you.”
The officer shook his head and chuckled again.
“What school do you go to?”
“Burlive Gil High School”
“Oh really? You must know my daughter. She goes there too. Oh she loves school a lot!”
Daren smirked. Loves school?! Looser… The police man noticed his expression.
“What? Do you know her?”
“Probably not. What’s her name?” Daren asked with curiosity.
“Ashley. Ashley Shirley.”
