A Glisten Creek Novel
Ch. 2 GIRL IN THE SEA
May 19th
~Maverick~
I just have to get out there to the waves. I can't wait any longer! Its only 7 am on a saturday but I can get out easy enough. I need to feel the burning grains of sand sinking warmth into my toes. I yearn for the chilly water of the pacific to cure my unease. Most of all I want to see her. I've never seen anything so beautiful.
Her hair is a light-white blonde tinted blue in the water with the brightest blue eyes I've ever seen. Her skin is very pale contrasting to the black-blue void. And she glows with a beautiful iridescent light. She's about my age and always wears a light blue ripped dress that only partially covers her body. And she never has to swim, she literally glides through the water. The only downside is I have to be drowning for her to come out. I can easily hold my breath much longer than others though. That seems to always fool her. I don't exactly know who or what she is but she always comes. Every day. Every time.
It is early Saturday and no one should be out for a few hours. I live in Quelona Beach, California the most beautiful beach in all the state. It is forever warm here and wonderful. I live in one of the beach houses right on the sand of the shore. I am a surfer and surf for hours a day. I'm a national surfing contest champion and am going to go pro one day. Surfing is my one and only love. Except of course... the girl in the sea. "Maverick! Maverick! Hey what's up dude! Didn't expect to see you up this early- well actually now that I think about it, you would come out this early." A guy with golden blonde hair and brown eyes yells as he runs towards me surfboard in hand. It's Zack, my best friend since I stood up for him against The Rebels of our school when they tried to pressure him into some bad stuff in 6th grade year. We are in 9th grade now, only 19 more days including weekends until summer and being a sophomore. Freshman year went by so quickly. I've been surfing even more now getting ready for summer preliminaries.
"Hey Zack, what's up?" I yell back. "And, getting ready for preliminaries, of course." That's all I ever do these days. I haven't been out of the water except for eating and sleeping for weeks. "Nothing much, bro. You think you could try teaching me again?" he asks. "Fine, but Zack you've got a lot more to lose than your dignity in these waters." I glance to the water. "Yah, whatever man I don't need your intense-mysterious talk, I just want to surf." "What? Oh yah sure..." I say pulling my thoughts away from the secrets beneath the surface of the waves. I don't look like all of the other surfers, or like Zack. Instead of blonde hair and orange tan skin. I've got light caramel tan skin, brown eyes, and chocolate brown hair. Most of the girls always fall for me because I'm popular, I play every sport, especially surfing, and I'm not like everyone else. But I've only got an eye for one girl. If only I could see her in person.
The instant I touch the clear and cool water, all my fears wash away and I'm whisked into the world under the sea. Sometimes I think that I'm connected to water in ways that others can't even imagine. But thats just the surfboard talking. I take one last breath before I sink down into the shallow sea. I wait about a minute before I start to see tiny figments in the shadows. "Who are you?" She says in the most angelic and innocent voice I've ever heard coming out from behind a rock. That's the first time I've heard her speak. The first time I saw her she was scared to death and had no idea where she was. "How do you keep drowning?" She asks again. I'm so lured into her grace and beauty, I almost forget to hold my breath. It's been almost a minute and a half and my lungs are burning. I motion to her to stay here or come with. She nods. I swim as fast as I can to the surface and breath a nice savory breath. Then I swim back down. I smile when I see her still there looking lost and confused. I swim closer and surprise her by grabbing her hand. It's ice cold and feels like all of the ocean is in her grasp. I gasp. That was a mistake. Water starts to enter my lungs and I'm frozen. I can't move. I kick and struggle to no avail. What happens next surprises me. The girl leans in and kisses my lips, pushing air into all parts of my body. And separating water from my lungs. She pulls away looking ready to leave, but I grab her hand again. She comes closer, tears somehow rolling down her face. I wipe them away and look at her. Luckily I took sign language in 8th grade and I sign to her, 'What is your name?' "Cordelia... Descants." She says hesitantly as if she didn't know her own name. "What's yours?" She asks curiously like she actually cares about the answer. 'M. A. V. E. R. I. C. K.' I sign. Really it's only a nick name but I've been called it for as long as I can remember. It's silent for a long time after that. I just look at her forgetting the need to breathe. I have no control. I'm drowning but I won't bring my arms and legs to move. She shakes her head worriedly and grabs my arm. For such a small girl she is strong in the water. She hauls me up above the surface and I'm back to normal, treading water. For some reason though she won't surface. "Why won't you come up?" I ask dejectedly. I sink down to hear her reply. "Not won't. Can't. Not in this form anyways. I'm sorry Maverick but you have to stop calling me. Other people drown too but for real and I have to endure my curse of watching. I cannot help. So please don't make me watch you die. I can only hope I won't see you again." She says holding back her tears. All I want to do is hold her, help her like she helped me. But I'll never see her again. Ever. And in that second she lightly grazes her lips against mine and disappears in a glowing puff of mist and bubbles.
