Any Day-completed

Chapter 2

The next day was Saturday so I dressed in sweats and a long sleeved shirt and went out to the park and sat on the grass. There were kids playing in the playground because it was a beautiful sunny day. A group of teenage boys were sitting on a bench at the far end of the field. I sat with my back rested against a tree, plugged into my IPod, I slowly began to fall asleep.

I woke with a start, wet and freezing cold. I look up and saw three grinning boys looking down at me. I defensively jumped to my feet and took two steps back, looking at them. 

‘Sorry babe, we couldn’t resist’ the shortest boy said. He was tanned with a really good looking face, brilliant green eyes and a cheeky smile, ‘Sorry, look I’m Beau, this is James and this is Daniel’ He pointed at the two taller boys. The tallest one, who Beau had introduced as James ,was looking at me concerned, he stepped towards me and I jumped and turned to run away , but as I turned I collided with something that was hard. I could hear Beau laughing, which was quickly stopped by a grunt of pain as one of the boys hit him. I looked up and saw Luke’s face. ‘You ok?’ My eyes were wide and his face suddenly showed recognition, ’Scout! Isn’t it?’ 

‘Yes’ I said and then gasped, raising a hand to my mouth. Luke shook his head, looking at me and took my hand

‘We’re going on walk’ He said to the others who laughed and whistled. I let Luke drag me away from the boys but we began to walk further and further away. I stopped walking. ’I’m not going to hurt you.’ Luke said, looking into my eyes. We carried on walking until we came to a small cave in a hollowed out rock. There were rocks on the floor and Luke sat down on one and gestured for me to sit on the one opposite. I stayed standing, on my guard. He sighed. ‘You know Beau? He’s my older brother and I have another Jai.’ I had no idea why Beau was telling me this, ‘James and Daniel have been friends with us forever and you see, we don’t have many friends here. We got bullied a lot in the first years because we were quite overweight and by the time we made up for it, it was too late because they already hated us. It’s just, Beau Jai and I, we’ve been through a lot. When we were younger, our Dad would constantly hit our mum in front of us. He left her, but it did a lot of damage. We saw how much it hurt her, Scout, and I would never, ever lay a finger on a girl. It’s something I promised myself.’ 

I was shocked. I sat on the rock opposite him and patted his knee as he held his face in his hands. I think he was crying but I didn’t want to point this out so I cleared my throat. ‘I lived in England for the first six years of my life. With my mum and my dad, we were so happy. My mum died when I was two and my dad, he loved her so much, and he couldn’t cope. He hit me and he didn’t feed me. I didn’t tell but a teacher saw the bruises and reported it. I was too scared to stay in England so they brought me here. I guess I’m just so nervous around men because of my father. I’m really sorry Luke.’ I was surprised at myself. I had just opened up, more than I ever had with anybody before. Luke stood up and held out a hand for me to take, which I did. He pulled me up and wrapped his arms around me and buried his face in my hair. My arms went around his neck as I smelled his neck I felt safer than I ever had.

LUKE’S P.O.V

To be honest, I’d known her long before the day I helped her up. She was beautiful to me. I had recognised her in first year and I had hid behind a shelf in the library to catch a glimpse of her at breaks. She was all I thought about, and what she had just told me broke my heart. I wanted to make her feel safe and then maybe she would love me as much as I loved her. Just thinking that a guy could do that to any girl, least of all Scout, made me feel sick of every man in the world. I rubbed her back as I felt her begin to shake with tears. It must have been terrible. 

‘Look, I mean if its okay with you, we can hang out if you want.’ She was silent for a few seconds. She was going to say no, I knew it. ‘I mean, you don’t have to, it’s cool.’ I felt awkward, so I stared at my shifting feet.

 ‘Yeah, okay.’ She spoke quietly I looked up at her; she too was staring at her feet. I wrapped my arm around her shoulder; even though she flinched it was a lot more subtle. I guided her out of the cave and back to Beau, Daniel and James.

SCOUT’S P.O.V

It was weird; I didn’t feel scared or jumpy around Luke. He actually made me feel safe. I felt bad when I flinched but it wasn’t out of fear, it was out of habit. He led me back over to Beau, who was sneering at me. ‘You all right now babe?’ Beau said, winking at me. I didn’t like him but I had to respect him for what he went through with his parents. I felt Luke tense his arm around me.

‘Leave it Beau.’ He said warningly.

‘She gorgeous, isn’t she Luke?’ Beau stepped closer to me; he was only a little taller than me as he grabbed my chin with his hand. Luke snapped his hand up to move Beau’s away.

‘Get off Luke, she’s not your property.’ Beau said

‘Yeah but she’s not yours either so back off.’ Beau squared up in front of Luke. As Luke removed his arm from my shoulder, I instantly felt colder. Beau was shorter that Luke but he looked stronger. Beau hit Luke around the face but Luke didn’t retaliate. ‘What’s your problem?’ Luke asked. Beau shook his head and spat at Luke’s feet as he turned and gestured for Daniel and James to follow him as they walked off. Luke waited until they couldn’t see him before bringing his hand to his cheek and cursing. I wasn’t sure what to do so I stood my ground. Eventually I stepped towards him and raised my hand to his cheek; I stroked it with my thumb gently. He lowered his head to rest it on my shoulder and wrapped his arms around my waist.

LUKE’S P.O.V

Beau makes me so mad. He’ll use any girl. Not Scout though, I won’t let him hurt Scout. She was watching Beau through narrow eyes as he walked off with James and Daniel. I heard somebody running up behind us. I turned and watched as Jai stopped in front of us, he doubled over and put his hands on his knees as he tried to regain his breath. I folded my arms and looked down at him with a smirk. Jai held a hand up to us and eventually looked up at me.

‘Sorry-slept-in.’ he panted, he coughed and then stood up straight holding his side. His eyes squinted as he stretched his back, leaning backwards slightly. His eyes rested on Scout. Then back to me. ‘Who’s this?’ He asked smiling and Scout, she smiled back.

‘My name’s Scout.’ He shook her hand joke-formally and she laughed. He got her to laugh before I did. She couldn’t even talk to me for ages when we met.

JAI’S P.O.V

As I looked at this girl, I could instantly feel myself falling. She wore her shirt sleeves over her hands in such a cute way, and she tried to hide her face behind her hair. I laughed.

‘What are you doing?’ I asked her, I reached my hand forward towards her face and I thought I saw her flinch a little, but I moved her hair behind her ear, ‘You’ve got a beautiful face, you should show it instead of hiding it.’ She beamed at me. It made my heart feel warm, seeing her smile. 

LUKE’S P.O.V

She was smiling at him and he was smiling at her. He pulled out his phone and passed it to her. They were speaking but I could barely hear any words, just watch as Scout put her number into Jai’s phone. He smiled and sent her a text, before hugging her and kissing her on the cheek then running away, I watched as he went off in a different direction. When she got the text she smiled to herself before saving his number in her phone. I looked over to see what it read.

I told her I had to go, I gave her a small smile and began to walk off.
