I glided through the water, guided by my sky blue tail. My long hair flowing down my back. I rolled onto my back and lay on the ocean floor. Then I noticed the figures of dolphins swimming closer to the surface. I pushed off the soft sand and gained speed as I dashed towards the figures. I was going to see the humans today. I reached the group and grabbed hold of a dorsal fin. I directed the dolphin where to go. I don't know how, I'd discovered I could do this when I was around seven. I had a special watching spot that I went to almost everyday, and sometimes at night. a rock that jutted out of the water, slanting up towards the shore. when we arrived there, I thanked the dolphin, giving it what I'd learned humans called a 'kiss' on the nose and hauled myself out of the ocean, scooching up the rock. I lay on my forearms, my tail hanging off the side of the rock, running my fingers through my hair. I saw a cluster of humans sat on a piece of red and white fabric. a....a blanket, I think. there were one, two, three, four, five humans. two fairly large, two fairly small, and one the tiniest of them, held by one of the larger ones. it was a family. Where I'm from, family doesn't really exist. I sighed and looked at the suns position. it was close to the horizon, I better get back soon. I took one last look at the humans, sighing. how i wish I could be one. I slipped off the rock and called the dolphin back. it was one of my best friends.
Now some people think that we mermaids live in groups I've heard humans call " cities ". its not true, we live on our own. once were 18, we leave our parents, and swim out into the sea on our own. then we mate, have children, and then keep swimming. a mermaid can only mate once, and she can have up to 6 children at once. But afterwards, she goes into the deep blue alone again. then dies, and turns to the foam on the surface of the sea. sounds pretty sad, but it's just the way we live. Kinda like most sea creatures, just were related to the Humans. So close, yet so far apart.
