Her amber eyes scanned the trees that surrounded her. Her breathing was quiet and slow, and she took careful, silent steps through the fallen leaves strewn across the forest floor. Wings flapped loudly overhead, though other than that, the only other sound in the near-silent forest was the quiet chirping of songbirds.

Wind whistled through the branches, and the trunks of the elderwood trees creaked softly. Normally, Quinn would be at peace in this environment, but right now she was alert, every muscle tensed as she moved swiftly through the leaves.

A sudden crack sounded loudly from the mass of trees to her left. She quickly pulled her crossbow out of the sheath on her back, readying an arrow with steady hands. Narrowing her eyes, she gestured upwards in a fluid motion.

A large cobalt-feathered Demacian eagle swooped down from the tops of the trees, talons outstretched. A loud screech echoed through the forest as a blur of dull blue and gold tore through the air.

The brush that Quinn had her crossbow aimed at shook violently, leaves falling to the ground as a figure exited the brush clumsily, landing hard on the ground in surprise. The huge bird of prey twisted rapidly in the air, dropping onto the fallen woman's chest and digging its sharp talons into the cloth of her shirt.

Quinn's arms dropped to her sides, the loaded crossbow forgotten. "Lux!?"

The woman laughed, placing a hand on the massive Demacian eagle's head, whose bright golden eyes flashed with recognition. It twitched, unhooking its claws from her clothing and hopping down onto the ground without a sound.

The woman stood, brushing herself off and adjusting her disheveled top with a grin. "Hiya, Quinn!"

"Lux, you startled me!" Quinn chided, unloading her crossbow and slipping it back into its sheath.

"Oh! Sorry," Lux apologized sheepishly, rocking up and down on the balls of her feet. "So, uh, what brings you into the forest, Quinn?"

"I could ask you the same question," Quinn responded, raising an eyebrow.

"Just taking a walk," Lux smiled. "I thought I saw Valor flying around and I know he always sticks with you, so I thought I'd come say hi." She twirled her steel staff around in her hands. "Well, I was taking a walk, until he jumped on me."

Quinn sighed, averting her gaze. "Yeah, I'm sorry about that. See, we're a bit tense at the moment." She turned to look at Valor, who was preening his feathers, gaze locked on his owner.

"What for?" Lux questioned, spinning around on one foot in a warm patch of sunlight. "It's a beautiful day."

"The weather is not of my concerns at the moment," Quinn replied gravely, looking back upwards to make eye contact with her confused friend. "Lux, I'm looking for Talon."

"Talon?" Lux said bewilderedly, tilting her head to the side. "The assassin from Noxus?"

Quinn nodded. "Yes. He'd gotten through the gates. Three guards, dead. He fled through the sewers," she added grimly, and Lux frowned.

"You assume he's somewhere out here, then?"

"It's our best guess," Quinn replied, and Valor flapped his wings forcefully as he took off into the air, flying in slow circles around the two.

"If you're looking for him here, then could I possibly be of help?" Lux asked excitedly. "I know this forest like the back of my hand."

Quinn thought quietly for a moment before nodding. "Normally I'd prefer to work alone, but I guess having a helping hand isn't too bad."

Valor squawked loudly in Quinn's ear as he spiraled around her, and she let out a sigh. "We're wasting time. If you're coming with me, Lux, you'd better move it." She turned and headed in her original direction, though she allowed a small smile to creep onto her face.

Lux grinned, running to catch up to her friend. "Wait for me, Quinn!"

Talon pressed himself to the trunk of a tree, cloaked in shadow. His breaths were quick and quiet as he listened to the footsteps nearby coming closer and closer. He could easily dispatch them, he thought, but right now his main goal was to return to Noxus and report that his task had been completed. If necessary, he'd certainly fight, but at the moment he'd rather avoid getting into any avoidable skirmishes.

The footsteps began to recede, and the assassin exhaled slowly as they faded out of earshot. Straightening up, he turned to continue in an opposite direction, but not before he was met with a faceful of feathers and sharp claws.

Stumbling backwards, he pulled out a blade from its sheath, using his free hand to wipe off the blood that was slowly oozing out of the new gash on his cheek.

Angered at being caught off guard, he swung at his assailant, which he happened to recognize: the large Demacian eagle that was always accompanied by Talon's rival, Quinn. He realized the immediate danger that was to follow as he ducked suddenly; sure enough, an arrow whizzed over his head and embedded itself into the trunk of a nearby tree.

Turning to look at his attackers, he recognized two Demacian soldiers, Quinn and Lux -- quite the forces to be reckoned with, as it was said.

With a few flaps of his wings, Valor returned to his owner, circling above her as she shot another arrow. Talon dodged it and launched a dagger in their direction, which managed to hit Lux in the shoulder.

Cringing, the sorceress ripped the blade out from her skin and dropped it, grasping her staff with both hands. An orb of light began to grow at the staff's end as the mage wielded it, and the assassin had no time to move as the orb shot forth and connected with his abdomen, causing him to stagger.

Quinn signaled to her companion, and Valor shot forward at her command, digging his claws into Talon's chest. The man swiped at the bird, and the steel of his blade slashed into the feathers and muscle, causing Valor to let out a screech as he freed the assassin from his grasp and took to the sky, vanishing into the leaves and branches of the trees.

Breathing heavily, Talon threw one last dagger in his opponents' direction, and turned to escape, deciding that the battle was not worth risking further injury. Quinn fired one more arrow, but the assassin was gone, fleeing into the shadows.

Quinn turned, sitting Lux down on the forest floor. "Are you okay?"

"I'm fine," Lux breathed, placing a hand over her wound and wincing. "He didn't hit anything vital."

"I can go after him later," Quinn muttered, ripping off a strip of cloth from her outfit and tying it around Lux's wound. She offered a hand as she stood. "Come on. Let's go find Valor."

A/N: so this is the short story that I used for an assignment in my English class. It's okay in my opinion, could be better but I procrastinated so I had limited time to complete it.

The characters are from League of Legends and the crappy writing is by me. c:
