Chapter 1
"How did I get here?" I ask myself. I'm standing in the middle of a deserted bridge at night. The cool darkness surrounds me and covers me like a thick blanket. I was drawn here by something and I intend to find out what. The wind starts to pick up and grey clouds start to appear in the sky. I can sense that someone is watching me. I've never felt so scared in my whole life.
The rain begins to violently pour down, drenching me in seconds. I'm alert and ready to find out what is out there. The wind starts to pick up and I feel the bridge start to sway. I'm hanging on to the railing for dear life. All of a sudden something attacks me from behind and I'm tossed to the ground. I can feel some of my bones shatter as the hit the asphalt. I lie on the ground and slowly bleed to death while someone stands over me and then..... I wake up.
I've been having the same dream for a year now. Ever since my brother died. Except this one was different. The thing that attacked me has always ran away right after it thinks I'm dead. Why did it choose to stay?
"Azzzraaaeeeelinnngggg. Are you up yet?" My best friend Kayla says as her voice crackles through my answering machine. "I know that you're emancipated and everything but skipping school still counts as truancy." Ugh. Why does she have to use such big words at 6 o'clock in the morning? I pick up the phone so that she doesn't clog my answering machine with " Maybe it will be better today! Come on I don't want to have to sit through History, Math, and Science without you. Then what about lunch? I am not going to sit at some random table by myself."
When I pick up the phone shes already started the pep talk and I have to shout her name five times just to get her to shut up. "So how's your morning grouchy?" she says happily. I void her question and say "See you at school. Goodnight." as I hang up the phone.
I go through my usual morning routine without even thinking about it because my mind still feels trapped by my dream. As I'm heading out the door I catch a glimpse of my pale reflection in the mirror. I've been avoiding mirrors for so long now that I don't even need to look at one to get ready. I look at the person in the mirror for the first time in a year and all I feel is hatred and sadness because I see so little of him in me. My brother Akshay and I were complete opposites, from our personalities to our appearance. My brown eyes with their blue flecks contrasted his blue eyes with scattered brown flecks but that's not the only difference. My dark brown hair contrasted with his pale blonde hair like night and day. I turn away from all the emotions that my reflection holds and head out the door.
The walk to school is pretty much normal. There's a fog covering everything but in Boston people are sort of used to it. Its not too hot and not too cold, its perfect. I take my time walking to school and think about convincing Kayla that wasting today in a stuffy old classroom reviewing stuff is so not worth it. Kayla has been my best friend since kindergarten. If she wasn't friends with me she would probably be one of the most popular kids in school. With her auburn hair and sparkling green eyes it doesn't take a genius to see why a lot of the guys at school have crushes on her.
I begin to get this eerie feeling that someone is following me. I turn down a dark alley to try to ditch them. As I pass by the Black Rose pub I realize where I am. The place he died. Newspaper headlines about my brother's death begin to pop into my head. "Akshay Grayco found mauled by animal in alley" and "Grayco son attacked by mystery animal." Then later on the headlines start to say "Body of Akshay Grayco missing." As I clutch my stomach in pain and fall to the ground I sense the thing that was following me run away. A thought, unheard, lingers in my head. "I'll come back for you." The thought isn't mine though. It's his.
