"I'm not sure if this is going to work, Hermione." Ginny said as I pointed my wand carefully at the small silver 'S' on her wrist.
Harry, Ron, Ginny, and I sat in an empty classroom during free period, door locked and shutters drawn, as I tried to find out exactly what Ginny's silver mark meant.
"Maybe she's right, Hermione." Said Harry gently, "Maybe it's meant to be a tag, a way of showing that this person did it."
"But still, wouldn't it be best to check? What if it really was dangerous?" I argued, refusing to believe that it was only a tag. I was sure it was something more sinister.
"Just get on with it, Hermione, I'm hungry." Ron said.
"But you've just had lunch!" Ginny said indignantly.
"Yeah, well, I'm still hungry."
I rolled my eyes, turning my attention back to Ginny's wrist. "Specialis Revelio!"
"And there you are, Hermione, nothing!" Said Ron.
"Wait- look!" I said, as soft gray smoke began to float from both the mark and my wand tip. It swirled into intricate letters, one after another, in midair.
The Silver Snake
"What the bloody hell is the Silver Snake?" Said Ron at once after the smoke faded.
"Whoever they are, they did that on purpose, so that if someone tried to examine the mark, that's what they'd find. C'mon, we have to see McGonagall!" I said, jumping up out of my chair. Harry and Ron followed. Ginny was already on her feet. We raced down the corridor wordlessly, and when we made it to the stone gargoyle, which was the entrance to the Headmistress's office, we stopped, Harry and I clutching stitches in our sides.
"Password's 'Dumbledore.'" Said Harry, "Don't ask how I know."
Curiosity burning alongside my panic and triumphance, I said the password. The gargoyle jumped aside and we hurried up to McGonagall's office. I stepped forward and knocked. "Come in!" Came the sharp voice of McGonagall.
Ginny pushed open the door and we filed in, one by one. Professor McGonagall sat behind the desk, looking a bit surprised to see them. Her gaze, along with other the other Heads, pierced me. Dumbledore was the most prominent of the portraits, his light blue eyes giving off the impression that he was x-raying anyone who came under his gaze.
"Potter, Weasley, Granger." She acknowledged each of us with a dip of her head. "To what do I owe this unexpected visit?"
"Professor, we know who murdered that Muggle man! Frederick Dulcan, the one from the paper!" Ron said at once. McGonagall's lips thinned, though nevertheless, her eyes widened.
"What Ronald means to say is, we know what the attacker is calling themselves." I said, irritated at Ron's bluntness.
"Do explain." She said.
"Er... okay. So, I was thinking about Ginny's mark, and then I thought, what if it's there for a reason, and not just a mark to indicate Dark Magic? So I used Specialis Revelio on it, and gray smoke came out and formed the words 'the Silver Snake' and then disappeared." I explained.
"Would you mind demonstrating, Miss Weasley?" McGonagall asked Ginny. She nodded, and I once again pointed my wand at the ornate S, said the spell, and waited. Sure enough, the name appeared moments later. McGonagall let out a soft gasp, and I nodded.
