Maka's POV

"At least take me with you."

"Soul, it's a meister mission. You know what that means, right?"

"I don't give a crap! Take me with you."

Maka sighed as she shook her head at Soul. Four days ago, Professor Stein announced that there would be a mandatory meister mission one month before their graduation. All meisters in her class were required to go, which meant that Kid and Black Star were going as well.

And tomorrow is one month from graduation, so they leave in the morning. But Soul is very much against this mission, especially when he heard the announcements in school say that the mission was not only very dangerous, but that death was a definite possibility to all who go. It happens every year, but Lord Death only addresses the graduating class, so when the date of the mission arrived, all students noticed a lack of meisters of the senior class. And their weapons? Well...they were gloomy.

And every year, there were meisters who died. Not many, normally only four to seven, but the rest of the underclassmen never knew how it happened. Except Maka, because she can get her Papa to tell her anything.

"Soul, I promise you, I'll be fine. I can take care of myself!"

"That's—ugh, that's not the point!"

"Then what is your point?"

He stood there glowering to the side, and crossed his arms irritatedly. She sighed again, then ruffled his hair affectionately. He blushed. "Soul, I wouldn't be able to take you with me even if I wanted to. It's a meister only mission. You had your weapon mission a couple months ago and I didn't fret about it! Because I knew you would make it. Why not have that same confidence in me? You do know who I am, right? I mean, we've been partners for years!"

He stopped glowering at glanced at her, his expression softening before frowning sadly. "I just don't want you to be put in danger, Maka." He scowled. "And I don't trust Stein and his scalpels."

"Yes, well, 'Stein and his scalpels' are what patched you up, remember?" She placed her hand over his chest, closed her eyes and inhaled deeply before exhaling and looking up at him. She was puzzled by the dark look in his eyes, and took notice of the slight increase in the rate of his breathing. She stored this information in the back of her mind and smiled warmly at him. "And I will always be grateful to him for that." With that said, she walked to her room and closed the door behind her, leaving Soul standing in the hallway to sulk.

After making sure she was as quiet as possible, she was finally ready to leave.  She had packed and gotten dressed, and it was now 3:00 in the morning. Now she just had to make sure she successfully left the apartment without waking Soul. She grabbed her backpack and her suitcase before slowly opening her door, and crept out of her room. Right as she was about to turn the door knob, she was suddenly being hugged from behind, and could immediately smell Soul's usual musky, leathery scent. She sighed, placing her hands on the arms that had wrapped themselves around her waist. She shivered lightly after feeling his warm breath going down her neck.

"You better come back alive," he grumbled into her skin, making her shiver once more. "Or else I'll take away your title of being 'the coolest meister ever'."

She giggled and felt him smirk as she did so. He gripped her tighter for a moment before finally letting her go. And a split second after he did, she whirled on him and grabbed the back of his head, bringing him down to her height.

And kissed him.

Soul's POV

Oh my fuck, she is kissing me. She is kissing me!

He couldn't figure out where he went right.

However, before he could even try to kiss her back, she pulled away, blushing deeply but smiling shyly. "I'll see you later, then?" But he couldn't move. He felt like he was on fire, in a good way of course. But then her smile faltered at his lack of response, and then she sighed. "Guess that was pretty weird, huh? I just thought...never mind. See you, Soul." She turned and opened the door, leaving hastily with her things, while he just stood there pathetically still, watching as she looked back at him one last time before she finally pulled the door shut behind her.

She kissed me.

He was in a daze, to confused to think it through, and too elated to even care. He walked to his room, closing the door behind him, and sighed as he am remained standing in front of his door. Then he realized that he wouldn't get an explanation until she came back from the trip.

If she comes back alive, that is, his brain reminded him. Now he was angry at her for pulling such a stunt without even explaining anything about, and that she did it right before she left for the biggest most dangerous fucking field trip of the year. He leaned against his door, his hands coming up to cover his face as he slid down to the floor.

She left me like this. I'll get her back for sure, when I see her next time.
