When night comes, all hell is unleashed but I'm not saying the daytime differs...
Some of us are normal but many are hysterical. We can't help but fear them... They are dangerous... They kill...
I am Madlen. I have been abandoned here by my sister after tata* died. My life hasn't always been like this... I haven't been always living inside a nightmare. Although even for me it is hard to remember that; the horrors of the asylum are imprinted in my mind and will haunt me forever. I hope to escape them and I try.... Every night through the screams and monstrous noises echoing through the corridors, I imagine mamma coming to take me away; I recall her smile like warm honey and her silky, fragile hands lightly stroking my hand.
"You are the ray of sunlight in my life," she used to say every time I came home from play with a wrecked dress and a cheeky smile.
She loved me. She really did! I think so... I'm not sure of things nowadays. Maybe the dementia is getting to me but I shall not think like that! NO! I am innocent.... I AM NOT MAD!
Stop...
Maybe I'm going bonkers from the fear of not becoming like them. Those horrible beasts going round murdering and hitting everyone. They killed Lisa yesterday, however no one mourns or grieves here... Everyone is too afraid. We are fighting to survive. Yet these killings and pain are becoming common. Does this mean that I'm going to end up taking innocent lives for my own entertainment? Does this mean I can get used to living in a madhouse? Or am I becoming cold blooded like the rest? Like life doesn't matter anymore....
But I have to protect Elitsa. I promised her mother when she brought her here. She died of sickness on our doorstep and the nurses took Elitsa in. They tied her to the bed whilst they weren't guarding it properly so I managed to set her free. She is only ten... I was seven when I came here... Surprising how I survived! Disease is spreading like wildfire here with so many of us locked together in tiny rooms.
The nurses give us bad food and water so we get sick and die. They want to get rid of us... They hate us although we've done nothing wrong! They made us so aggressive because we have to protect ourselves from them!
With the huge walls, barred windows, massive doors, barbed wire and the nurses.... It seems that the only escape from this hell is death. But I will not choose that way... I will do whatever I can to get out alive together with Elitsa... I made a promise... I made a promise....

This is a book set in Romania so to make it authentic I'm going to add some specific names and words. I am Romanian myself so I'm sure I know what I'm writing about. For this words I'm going to add a special glossary as you might not understand those words. I hope you like my concept so far and I'm open to grammar and spelling checks (I'm not very good at typing and my finger slips sometimes...). Please offer me your criticism to make me a better writer. Thanks <3

PS ~ If this cause really interests you, message me and I'll give you the link to the actual documentary about the Romanian asylums and orphanages. ^^
