CHAPTER 1
It started two weeks after we left. We knew what was coming, we had seen it and we got out of London before it completely took over. On TV they showed images of the infected, videos of them biting, killing. They had no idea what was happening, what they were dealing with. But as we sat in the crowded, tight underground bunker we had no doubt. The apocalypse had started.
It was late November and the chill that was biting the air made me shiver as I walked down the familiar alleyway that my mother always warned me to never go through, when I saw one of them. It was attacking a poor homeless man as he struggled against a large bin. The monster, which was once a young woman whose name tag read Macey, was gnawing at the guy's neck while its sharp nails ripped at is abdomen, spilling his intestines onto the concrete floor, staining it red. At first I had no idea what was happening, in my mind it was simply a crazed woman attacking a poor old man. I was shaking when I tried to peel this woman off of the now dead man. I stumbled backwards, unsuccessful at saving him. It was only once the woman turned her head in my direction and snarled at me with flesh hanging out of her mouth when I realised what stood in front of me, a crazed woman. Monster. Zombie!
Getting home was hard, the stench of the dried blood stung my nostrils as a ran home. I didn't bother standing around, trying to get help, ' The Walking Dead' had made it easy to recognise a zombie. I wrapped my jacket tight around my body as I stumbled through my front door, leaving a trail of bloody footprints as I ran up the stairs and into my bedroom. I started packing everything in a backpack, as much as I could fit before heading into my brothers room and doing the same. That's about the time my family stormed into the room and most probably saw an insane girl covered in blood acting... well insane. I tried my best to explain what I saw but my words got jumbled up and I lost control of my emotions, everything I had witnessed less than ten minute ago was getting to me and recalling those horrifying images flashing in my mind had me breaking down in the strong arms of my brother. Once I had found myself again, I practically dragged my family into the car and to the incident site. But it wasn't the same as before. For one the she-zombie was gone, but so was the homeless dude. The only sign that any of what I saw happened was the pool of blood and entrails that were splattered against the floor. I just looked at my mum to know that she believed me, as did my dad and brother. Once we had established that nothing was the same, that nothing was safe, we decided to leave, (Not before calling 999 and reporting what I had witnessed - they probably thought it was a prank and dismissed it, idiots), we called all our loved ones, everyone we cared about and warned them, simply telling them to leave and find a safe place, how many actually listened to our warning I don't know but at least we did it.
I was told that watching TV shows would turn my brain to goo, but in reality they taught me what I would need to survive in the most unlikely situtation; food; water; weapons. I immediately took charge disregarding the fact the I was the youngest. Before we left, I made sure to rummage through all our tinned food at home and then clear out the supermarkets with all the savings we had, we wouldn't be needing them once the apocalypse started. Then we set off, alone, in a small five-seater with a boot full of food and fuel (another necessity), and our legspace was occupied by weapons (mostly hammers and knifes, anything sharp).
We were lucky that we had time to prepare. To find ourselves a secure underground bunker and store up supplies to last us months, even a year or two. But that's not how it planned out. Although it had officially started two weeks after we left, it took a couple of months until the big push came, when everything crashed, electricity, internet. They tried to contain the infection, maybe that's why people lasted as long as they did. But in the end no one could stop it. It spread like a wildfire, uncontainable. I don't know how but by this time we had used up a quarter of our food. We needed more, I had to go out, to walk amongst the dead. It was hard, very hard, but we were alive. Which is more than I could say for others. Just in the first hour of breakout, it was estimated atleast a quarter of the population had turned, had died and come back again. It was like a horror movie, except we were living it,we couldn't turn it off. And the worse thing about it was that it wasn't just in the UK. No this was a worldwide catastrophe, a worldwide war. Except this time it wasn't man versus man, it was man versus the dead.
Now the streets are empty, I don't know how long it has been, I haven't been counting, just trying to stay alive. Cars are abandoned, the only things walking the streets are the dead and those lucky enough to survive and stupid enough to go out. I guess I would come into that category. I'm planning to move but I need a moment to wipe of the blood of the dead and my loved ones. So much has happened, I never thought it would turn out like this, but it has, and I'm alone. In a way it's better off like that, no one slowing me down, no one else to look after, no more losing people I love. I just have to keep moving forward, keep doing what I've been doing and I will be fine.
My name is Jessica and this is how I survive the zombie apocalypse.
