Chapter 1
Louis sat beneath the big sycamore tree, the blazing sun high above him. He watched Harry run into the river to cool off. He dunked his whole body under then began to drink some of the water.
"Lou! Louis come have some! It's good Lou, try some!"
"Haz, you shouldn't be drinking from the river, it isn't good water. You could get sick!"
Harry sunk down with a slight frown on his face. "I'm real sorry Louis, I didn't know it was bad for me, I'm so sorry Lou. I didn't mean to"
Louis smiled at the younger boy. He loved him very much and wouldn't want anything in the orld to harm him. He hated seeing him upset, so he knelt down beside him and kissed his head. "I know you didn't mean to Hazza, I just don't want you getting sick alright?"
"I know Lou" Harry smiled "I never gonna drink it again, I swear it." He continued to cool himself off dunking under yet again. He was splashing causing the water to ripple over to the other side. "Wow Lou! ook what went and did. Did you see it Lou huh? Watch! I can do it again!"
Louis smiled again and ruffled the boys curly hair and kissed it. "Yea I see Harry." He started to chuckle lightly to himself.
Louis stood up and went back to lie under the tree. He heard Harry sloshing through the water.
"Lou! Lou! Look what I went and found!" Harry was holding a rat in his big hands petting it roughly.
"Haz! Put it away, look you went and killed the damn thing"
"I'm sorry Lou, it's just so soft, and I like soft things"
"It's doing stuff like that that's gonna get yo in trouble like last time. Do you remember what happened back in Weed?"
"Lou, honest, I didn't mean no harm. I didn't want to hurt her, I swear."
"I know that, and you know that. But everybody else don't get it Haz. You can't just go and touch everything you like."
"I'm sorry Lou, I don't mean to, I just can't help it, you know?"
"I know Haz, just get rid of the rat alright?"
Harry went splashing through the water again to put it back right where he found it. A few minutes later he came and sat down next to Louis, squirming to try and get comfortable.
Suddenly Harry stopped what he was doing and look up at Louis.
"Lou?"
"Yea?"
"What are we gonna do now Lou?"
"I already told you what we're gonna do."
"Tell me again Lou. I love it when you tell me."
"We're heading off to a ranch of few miles up. We're gonna work there and get us some money."
"What are gonna do once we get the money Louis?"
"I already told you, don't you remember?"
"Oh.. yea yea I remember, I just want you to tell me again"
"Once we get our money, we're gonna buy a big ol' ranch, and we'll grow corn nad tomatoes and a bunch a fruit that we can sell and eat-"
"And what about the animals Lou? We can get pigs and cows and dogs, lots and lots of dogs right Lou?"
"Yea, we'll have lots of animals to. We'll get some cows for milk and cream and cheese and such, and we get a whole bunch of chickens to, for eggs and we can roast the chicken for food too I guess. And we can make ham and bacon and sausage from the pigs-"
"I'll even look after 'em myself Lou, I'll feed 'em and take care of 'em, and I won't forget to, you won't even have to remind me Lou."
"Yea, you can look after the animals and I'll look after the crops." Louis put his arms around Harry and let the boys head fall onto his shoulder as he yawned. "Now you listen to me Haz, if anything happens at this new ranch, anything bad like last time, I want you to come right back to this very spot and hide in a bush or something. When everything's good and fine again I'll come and get you, alright?"
"Ok Lou" said Harry sleepily.
"Now repeat it to yourself so you don't forget. We leave for the new ranch tomorrow, and if anyone asks about our last job you aren't gonna say nothing got it?
"I got it Lou"
Louis sat awake for a couple minutes longer listening to a murmuring Harry repeating, "I won't say nothing" and "run back here, hide in a bush". Louis couldn't help but smile down at the now asleep younger boy with his wild curly gntly brushing over his eyes. He could feel his light breaths on neck. This is how Louis wanted it to always be, just him and his Hazza, not having to worry about work or money, because in reality none of it mattered to Louis, as long as he had Harry.
