I wasn't ready, I couldn't do it. I stood shaking at the edge of the pool. I looked at my other competitors; slim, athletic girls that were thinner and taller than me. They were focused, they were determined. They would beat me. "Shut up Charlie, you know you can do this." I whispered to myself, shaking my hands out. The timer was counting down; 15 seconds till start. The tanoid went off overhead, telling us all to get on our podiums. In the next 12 seconds I would dive in and swim a sprint 100m in the pool. 10 seconds. "You can do this." you whisper. The girl to my left chuckled, laughing at me. "Yeah, you can go eat a pie too, fat cow." She pulled her goggles down and looked ahead of her. Looks like I had a good reason to win.
The clock hit zero and I took a deep, steady breath. I could do this. "On you're marks," the man on the side line said. This was it, place and I get a spot to try for the Olympic swim team. My whole time built up to this one moment.
"Get set," Silence hung in the air. No one in the crows dared breath, dare disturb our focus. The anticipation in the room was ridiculous. No one understood how much I needed this.
"Go!" The gun fired, and we leapted off our step. I dived deep into the water in one stroke, pushing the water away. I was strong in the water, I was powerful. I surfaced for air and saw that their was one girl in front of me. I took a deep breath and took strong slashes at the water; front crawl was my strongest stroke. I looked up briefly and saw I was approaching the end. I got ready to do my "twirly" as my family had named it, and start swimming back. Half way through, this was it. I spun underwater and pushed my feet off the wall. With the strength of the water behind me, I stayed under and powered forward, determined to win. I had to win, this was my only chance! I went up for breath, not daring to see where everyone else was. This was my last run, this was it. I could feel my muscles starting to ache but I was almost done. I stretched my arms out further, willing to hit the wall, until finally I hit it. I stuck my head out and looked around. A girl down the far end had only just hit the wall, but nobody else had reached there. Had I done it? The crowd were roaring and screaming, but I couldn't make out what they were shouting. I saw everyone smiling and smiled myself. I wasn't sure who had made it, but I prayed to my dad it was me. Dad. I knew know matter what, I was doing him proud.
I gave the girl to my left a smile, "I think I deserve a burger, don't you?" Laughing, I clambered out the pool, grabbed my towel and headed over to the stands to see my family, when I saw him. He was stood by the diving board, waiting for his turn I pressumed. Beautiful brown eyes and such a strong physique. I caught his eye and he smiled, a gorgeous, sparkling smile. I blushed, smiled back and hurried to the stand. Who was he, and why me?
Sorry it's short but I'm just getting used to it, weird writing again after so long! Aha, leave a comment and tell me what you think!:)
