Claire had never run away before. This was all new. She had tried to pack a bag but she wasn't familiar with that either. All she managed to grab was her cell phone, a bottle of water, and a granola bar. It had been two days since the argument she had with Peter. And she hadn't eaten since lunch the day of the argument.
It was around midnight. Fog was rolling in on the forest floor. The only place she knew that she could hide was the forest near her neighborhood. Hopefully, who she was hiding from hadn't figured that out. She had been moving constantly and sleeping for 20-30 minutes at a time.
Right now, she was struggling to keep her fire going with the little, moist twigs she found here and there. The fire crackled and slowly faded. It was all Claire had to keep her company. Of course, no matter what, she would be fine. She always was. She'd stabbed, hit, shot, struck and even tried to drown herself, but every time, her bones popped back in place, her cuts healed, and her organs started up again. It was just who she was. She was a freak. There was nothing she could do about that.
She was deep in thought when she heard a snapping sound in the far distance. "Calm down" She told herself, "Don't worry. It's probably nothing." But she couldn't help herself. The darkness of the unknown created imaginary shadows and she was soon shaking with fear.
Then, she heard a rustling sound in the bushes to her right. She was prepared to attack. A beaten stick in her right hand was the best thing she could use as a weapon. The rustling sound grew in volume gradually as Claire stared paralyzed with fear. Out of the darkness, two yellow eyes emerged towards her. The fire had gone completely out when the creature pounced towards Claire. She instinctively attempted to att I the thing but when she looked to take a swing with her weapon, all she found was a harmless rabbit. It was frightened by her movement and hopped away.
Claire's heart was pounding and she was finally relieved by the fact that she wasn't being followed. She was alone again.
