This is my first story I'm writing, so I'm going to need feedback. Thanks!
Nick never knew why it happened to him.
"You little pest!"
"You're only good for getting money!"
"We're dropping you off at the center tomorrow. I bet this is the longest anyone has kept you."
He shut his eyes closed to block out the sounds of the sharp words. When the memories faded away, he opened his eyes to look at the cars and trees whipping past. The lady typed something on her phone with long nails, and then glanced at Nick with a dirty look, all the while driving. The lady had never told him what her name was, in all the three years they had been 'together'. He just hoped that this home would be nicer than the last one.
The car stopped at a nice-looking house. Not that it mattered.Looks were always deceiving.
He could feel his heart rapidly pumping. He stayed where he was, staring at the house.
"Well, Nick, are you just going to sit there? Get out of the car!"
Nick slowly walked towards the house. He couldn't run; the lady was behind him. When he reached the front door, the lady stepped in front of him and rung the door bell. After a few moments, the door opened to reveal a woman. She looked like she was in her late 30's.
"Come in, come in," the woman smiled at Nick. He didn't return the smile, and stared at the floor. "How are you?"
"I'm fine," the lady said. There was a few awkward moments of pause, and the lady nudged Nick. Nick stiffened, then forced himself to relax.
"I'm good,"he said without taking his eyes off the floor.
"That's good, would you like something to eat?"the woman asked.
"Actually," the lady interrupted."Nick is perfectly fine, and I need you to sign these documents."
As the woman signed the papers, Nick viewed the living room. It was like any other living room he'd seen, only there was a happy air to the room. When the lady was walking by Nick to exit the house, she hissed, "Don't mess this up, or I'm dropping you off at the worst orphanage I can find. Nick knew that she wouldn't because it was a very long used threat.
When the lady was gone, Nick expected the woman to drop her friendly smile and order him to do some sort of chore. But she didn't.
"You know my name, right?" the woman asked, clearly expecting a yes. Nick kept his eyes on the floor, and shook his head. "Oh, well, I'm Mrs. Herschel, but you can call me Rose."
"Okay... I'll show you to your room." Rose walked up the stairs, and Nick followed her. She opened the second door to right. The room was painted a light blue, and the bed was tucked into the corner farthest away from the door. "You'll be alright here, right?" Rose put her hand on Nick's shoulder, and he flinched from the contact, and she quickly drew her hand away. Nick slung off his worn-out backpack, and sat down on the bed. Please go away, please go away, Nick thought. Instead, Rose eyed him. "You don't talk much, do you?" The pause said enough. "Um... well, I'll just be going now.
Nick waited a few seconds to make sure that Rose was away, then pulled up his knees, wrapped his arms around his body, and quietly cried. He didn't even know why he was crying, maybe he was crying because he knew that Rose would show her true colors eventually.
