There once was a five-year old girl who moved into a new neighborhood. As she was carrying her belongings into her new house, a little boy came running towards her with a big red rose in one hand. He grinned at the little girl and said, "Welcome! I hope we can be friends!" He held out the rose to her face, the petals tickling her skin. The little girl's heart skipped a beat, and she blinked, blushing.

"Thank you very much," she replied softly. "But I don't have any free hands to hold the rose so I'll come right back!" With that, she ran into the house and set her belongings in her room before going back outside. The little boy was sitting on her front porch, and she approached him. When he saw her, he gave a big smile and finally gave the little girl the rose. When she took it, he said,

"Let's be best friends!" The little girl smiled back, laughing.

The little girl and the little boy grew up together and soon entered elementary school. They became very close and played with each other every day. One day during recess as the little girl was playing tag with the little boy, she tripped over someone's foot. She scraped her knee, and when she looked up from the ground, she saw another girl with a mean face. "You don't belong here," the girl said. "You're ugly," she added.

The little girl started crying and put her hands on her bloody knee, trying to make the pain stop. Then, the little boy came up and saw his best friend. "You, stop," he told the other girl. "That's not nice."

"She doesn't belong here. She wasn't born here," the girl replied, frowning.

"She lives here now, so she belongs here! You got no right to say who does or doesn't belong here!" The little boy yelled at her. The other girl "hmph-ed" and walked away. The little boy looked at his friend on the ground and bent down. "Let's go to the nurse's office," he said, helping her up. "It's right over there, see? It won't hurt that much!"

The little girl sniffed and got up. As they walked towards the nurse's office, there was a red rose bush along the sidewalk. The little boy picked a rose off and handed it to the little girl. The little girl glanced at the rose then at her friend and asked, "Why'd you protect me? She's right. I don't belong here." The little boy looked into her eyes.

"'Cause you're my best friend," he simply replied.

With the little boy protecting the little girl all throughout elementary school, the two entered middle school. The little girl wasn't so little anymore, and she gained lots of new friends. But, she was still best friends with the boy.

The girl and the boy were both very smart, and there was also a very competitive boy who was in every single of the girl's classes. Whenever the girl got a higher grade on a test than the competitive boy, he hated her more and more.

During Valentine's Day, the girl received a teddy bear from one of her boy classmates. It was very big and soft, and she liked it a lot. When she was talking to her best friend at the end her math period, the competitive boy grabbed her teddy bear and started flinging it around. The girl cried out and tried to take her gift back. But, the competitive boy was tall and strong and would not give it back to her.

Her best friend stepped forward in attempt to retrieve the bear back. Seeing the boy coming, the competitive boy bolted out the door and ran away. The boy ran after him in a beat. They did not come back for a while, even after the bell rang. The little girl waited five minutes after class. When they did not come back, she decided to leave. She grabbed her best friend's backpack and waited at the front of the school for the boy.
