Something was up. I knew it. There's was something off about Amanda. I don't know what though, and I was destined to find out.

"Hey," I tried sounding normal, "Something wrong? Like, something on your mind, or bothering you?"

She stared at me then shook her head 'no' and said, "Nope. I'm fine. Why?"

I rubbed the back of my neck, feeling slightly nervous, "Oh, well, it's nothing. Just, something seemed different about you. I wasn't sure what so I thought I'd ask."

She smiled hesitantly and said, "No. I'm fine. Thanks for your concern though."

She turned away and prepared food for the rest of her pets. I stood back and watch. She seemed fidgety. Something was going on. I need to know.

I touched her shoulder lightly and she jumped a little, seemingly startled, "Sorry. I didn't mean to startle you. Um, you know you can tell me anything, right? No matter what, and I promise, if you don't want me to tell, I won't and I'll never get mad either, okay?"

She nodded. I searched her eyes and found a mix of emotions, worry, concern, nervousness, and was that fear? No way. I shrugged it off and walked away. I just need to give her time. I'm sure she'll come around eventually. If not, I'll call Ashley and he'll know what to do.

I waited patiently in the living room for her as she finished tending to her pets. She finished up and cleaned up what little mess she made. She came over and sat next to me, an awkward silence filling the space.

"So," I said, trying to break the silence, "Why do you have so many pets? I mean, it's not a bad thing or whatever but I'm just wondering."

She looked at me and said, "I love animals. Always have. Always will. I guess you could say they're my 'passion'. I wanted to be a vet when I was little, but my friends managed to talk me out of it. I knew I'd never be able to handle some conditions animals may be in and I'd never be able to put an animal down."

I nodded understandingly and said, "Yeah. It's tough at first but I'm sure after a while its not as big of a deal to certain vets."

She nodded then looked away. I looked around, taking in the scenery surrounding me. Her house was nice, I will admit. I'm sure Ashley helped her pay for at least half of this stuff.

She stood up, "Hey. Um, it's getting kinda late and it's been a long day. I think I'm going to hit the hay."

I stood up and said, "Okay. Yeah. Sure. Fine. I understand. You want me to leave?"

She looked like she was having a mental debate before shaking her head 'no' and speaking once more, "No. If you don't mind I mean. You don't have to. I guess I just, want you to. I feel...I don't know...almost as if..all my problems and 'bad' in the world...'disappear' when you're around. I like it."

She managed a real smile. I smiled back sincerely as she lead me to her bedroom. Damn, and I thought the living room was impressive?

Her bedroom was massive. I'd say at least the size of two regular rooms. She had a king size bed, plasma screen TV, giant walk-in closest and far more.

My jaw dropped and she laughed then said, "Close your mouth. You'll catch flies."

She laughed again and did she, wink? Oh my god. No. No way. She didn't. She jumped onto her bed and looked at me. I walked over and sat on the edge of the bed,

Within seconds I felt hands on me, pulling me backwards. Next thing I knew, Amanda had wrapped herself around me and was trying to sleep. She was so adorable when she slept. She looked so innocent, almost like an angel. I smiled and kissed the top of her head then finally drifted off to sleep.
