"Do not stop!" Her father shouted to them. His voice didn't travel anywhere but their brains, ringing over and over again reminding them to never, ever stop running.
Brutus couldn't stand it, he took a glance behind him. He only caught one focused glimpse of them behind the five, before he stumbled.
Aurelie grabbed his arm and pulled him with her, ignoring how he continued to stumble before getting back to his feet.
"Stop." She said the second he was running straight next to her. Her head only reached his nose.
"There's so many. How did they know we were there?" Brutus was already panting.
"Maybe you snored too loud?" His sister suggested.
"Shut up!"
They had to make it to turn around the block, they just had to. The air was cold. They followed their father and turned left. And Aurelie hates turns. In the dark the two were lucky enough to even see the shape of their father, way up ahead leading the way and checking out for anything ahead of them, and their mother who wasn't quite as far. Despite her small body, and that she had their youngest brother on her back, she was quite fast and steady.
"Left left left." Aurelie heard behind them. She swore it sounded like someone talking on the other side of her, not needing to raise their voice. Like someone was whispering in her ear.
She went faster.
The voice sounded like someone half asleep, or in total bliss. Though when Brutus had looked behind him, they looked more excited than calm.
"In!" The house looked like it had about four floors, Aurelie wondered what her father was thinking.
They ran in, their mother slammed the door right after they made it in.
"What-why-" Brutus began to say.
"Go help your father-Now."
He ran to where Marie pointed.
Before Aurelie could ask what they were doing, their mother had already ordered her to help get the Bookcase from the other room.
Alexander the whole time was crying by the side of the hallway they were in. They didn't bother asking him to stop, Messy's aren't stupid. They already know that they're in here. But the old lock wasn't going to last forever.
"I counted ten." Marie said conversationally to Aurelie as they were pushing the bookcase against the door.
Aurelie paled and nodded. Ten. That's too many.
"Do you think they saw the smoke or something?"
"It's possible. They could of seen it awhile ago. Assumed there'd be a lot of people."
"We are a lot of people, technically."
Her mother looked at her, then gave the bookcase one more good shove.
"Alright. That's the best we can do. Guys, go shut windows and doors."
Aurelie headed towards the back of the house, glancing up the stairs. Most likely, the window's will already be nailed shut. She knew it would be smart for her to check upstairs, but she had a feeling her father would want to check it out. Besides, just thinking of going up there made her shake.
Her father was heading back. Brutus was at his side. At most time's, she considers her brother to look strong. He has some muscles, and is almost a head taller than her. Though, she doesn't know if you'd consider herself tall or not.
