Chapter 2 – Training and The Fight

The freshman hallways were cleared out by the second bell for the lunch period and the teachers in the surrounding classrooms had already gone to the cafeteria. Derek had stayed after class because his teacher wanted to talk to him. By now that teacher quickly sped off to lunch leaving Derek alone in the hallway.

Mr. Thomas must have been hungry, I think he jogged out of the classroom, Derek thought to himself.

Derek was the only one left in the hallway; he was standing in front of his open locker and mumbling to himself. He was wearing cargo pants, a navy blue vest, and a black polo shirt that day. He put some books from his bag into his locker and closed the door. He looked right and then left. He was used to moments like these being interrupted by bullies. He closed his locker when a hunkering guy burst through the hallway doors.

“Turd! Give me your lunch money or I’ll beat it out of you!” Said the bully who’s name was Harold.

I thought high school would be different, Derek thought as he was being lifted off the ground by the bully. Derek then reached into his pocket and took out a five dollar bill.

He doesn’t know I was prepared, Derek thought to himself.

“I’ll give you all I have,” Derek said as he held up the five dollar bill. The bully took the money but still had an unsatisfied look on his face.

“Five dollars? This isn’t enough to buy a drink, Derek,” Harold said as he painfully smudged the five dollar bill in Derek’s face.

“I heard about you from the bullies that didn’t graduate your middle school. They told me to keep the torch burning or something like that,” Harold said gruffly.

Am I the torch? Derek thought to himself.

The bully pushed Derek against the locker with his forearm and reached into Derek’s other pocket with his free hand. He took out Derek’s wallet and with the other hand he took the rest of Derek’s money out of the wallet.

“You’ve got another ten dollars here. I don’t like it when turds lie,” Harold said, now speaking louder.

Harold then punched Derek hard in his stomach. Harold looked around to make sure that someone wasn’t coming and then started to kick Derek. Derek crumpled down to the ground and then curled up into the fetal position.

I’ve done this time and time again, Derek thought to himself, the pain’s a lot less than middle school.

“Hey kid”, There was another student in the hallway. He tapped Harold’s shoulder.

“What the heck do you want?” Harold said as he looked back at none other than Emery.

Without saying a word, Emery grabbed Harold by the collar of his shirt and also the belt of his pants and threw him on the ground. Emery rolled up his sleeve as Harold got up.

“If you want to fight someone your own size, let’s go!” Emery said angrily.

                “Emery!” Harold screamed.
