Rainbows in the Rain
It was raining heavily and all I wanted to do was to get to Tess's as fast as possible. Just a few blocks away. I could walk it. A high pitched shriek of joy pierced through the raindrops and brought the dark streets into focus. Right in front of me was the most colourful girl I had ever seen. She lit up the paved road with her long blonde hair, red jumper and bright blue leggings. She had on the most ridiculous dark green Doc Martens too. With little red skulls all over. There she was, in all her rainbow glory.
The mist from the raindrops surrounding her and the ping-pong table she was standing in front of like a veil.
I had forgotten about this place, and the ping-pong tables. It used to be the coolest place to be on a Saturday afternoon. People would drag along their boyfriends, moms and dogs just to get a chance to get in a quick game or two. But a few months ago, it become the scene of Byron Bay's most violent murder to date and suddenly it was avoided like the plague.
Opposite her, a man hit the ball back to her, smirking. The total opposite of her. Dressed all in black, like he was in an indie grunge band, dark shoulder-length hair. "Keeeyaaan!" she screeched, as she missed her shot and the tiny ball flew through the air and landed by my feet. I picked it up and she jogged over, sheepish grin and tidying her hair.
"Thank you so much! Totally klutzy of me, sorry!" she exclaimed taking the ball out of my outstretched hand. Running back to the man, she turned and gave me a wave. Super friendly, maybe way too friendly. But as I walked away I realized : maybe I liked that.
