Maddie's P.O.V.
Maddie waited for Kendall in her car. It was the first day of their junior year in high school and they both vowed to be friends forever. With a blink of an eye Kendall was sitting in Maddie's passenger seat.
"Can you believe we have to go to a regular public school?" Kendall sighed.
"Yeah, it sucks we both didn't get accepted to the arts school this year."
"We're both amazing dancers but we didn't make it. But then someone like Chloe makes it."
"I know," Maddie muttered.
"Totes unfair."
Maddie just stared at the road. She did get into the school like past years and even got a scholarship. When she called Kendall and found out she didn't get accepted she lied she bombed her audition and didn't get in. She wished she could've gone to the art school, her family has been short on cash and it would've helped everyone with the scholarship. Maddie looked over at Kendall as she admired her freshly painted purple sparkly nail polish and sighed. They were best friends but sometimes Maddie felt she couldn't tell Kendall anything. Her family are millionaires and she has everything and anything she wants. As well anyone she wants. Well except when she found out Chloe went on a date with the guy she liked. She vowed to make her life a living hell and as of now she's been succeeding.
They pulled into their new school parking lot. They both made there way into the school. Kendall strutted in. Every eye was on her. She wore black high-waisted shorts with gold buttons, a black designer tank top, a black cardigan that went a bit lower then her shorts and shiny gold flats. Maddie walked shyly a bit behind her. It was like she was unnoticeable beside Kendall. She wore plain blue jeans, a floral tank top, and red converse. Kendall smiled and waved like she was on a float in a parade, making sure to wink at all the boys she was attracted to. While Maddie stared at the ground and hurried off to her locker. They both were the new girls and it was obvious Kendall was more impressive. After the first time Kendall beat her at a competition it was like she was always better. She was always on top of the pyramid, always winning crowns and became Abby's new favourite. It was like she was forgotten. Lost in thought, she accidentally bumped into someone and all books fell to the ground.
"I am so sorry!" Maddie quickly apologized picking up her things.
"It's fine. Hey, I haven't seen you around here before. Are you new?"
Noticing the deep voice she could tell it was a boy. She couldn't bring herself to look up from her books yet. "Yeah, I just transferred."
"Well, I'm Liam. What's your name?"
"Maddie." She quietly muttered.
"I'll see you around Maddie," he was walking away but turned around and said, "A pretty girl like you should smile more. It make you even more stunning."
That was when Maddie got a good look at him. He looked about 5'8 which was pretty tall compared to Maddie's barely 5'1. She wished she looked up earlier because he had the most mesmerizing green eyes she'd ever seen. He also had long, really light brown hair that could be mistaken for dirty blonde. How could a guy like that think she was pretty? It's not like she was Kendall, guys didn't obsess over her. She hasn't even been a date since the summer before sophomore year.
She went through her first two periods without a hiccup. She actually was very smart but she didn't care about that stuff. All she wanted was to be on broadway. For lunch she quickly learned public school food was not as extravagant as her old school food. She traded in her typical Cesar salad with seasoned chicken and fresh iced-tea for a slice of greasy pepperoni pizza and a carton of milk. She was sitting by herself. She felt pretty lonely because her and Kendall had different lunch periods. So she just quietly munched on her pizza.
"Hey, it's Maddie right?" She looked and almost chocked on her food as she saw Liam.
"Yeah, hi," she didn't have a clue on what to say.
"You're not going to eat alone are you?" He half smiled which drove Maddie crazy.
"I don't really know anyone at this school." She frowned.
"Hey, what'd I say about smiling? You know me and I'd love to sit with you. If that's okay?" He looked genuinely nervous.
"It's okay."
He slid down on the bench beside Maddie. For the rest of the period she spent time getting to know Liam. She was actually having a good time for once. She had many friends but she always just felt alone in a crowded room. She even felt lonely with Kendall nowadays. Something was different about today though. Something about Liam put a goofy smile on her face. When she heard the bell that signaled lunch was over, she sighed.
"I'll see you later, Maddie. Keep smiling," and then he was gone.
The next three periods flew by. Maddie loved Math, Chemistry, and Geography. They were her all-time favourite subjects. Before she knew it, the final bell rang. She waited in her car for Kendall. Ever since she got her license she was basically Kendall's driver. She saw Kendall walk over to the car. She gracefully plopped herself down in the car.
"Hey Mads," before Maddie could utter a single word Kendall continued on, "Today was totes awesome! Girls legit begged me to be their friend. You should've seen all the guys that asked for my number. How did your day go?"
Maddie was happy to finally have a moment to talk, "I met this amazing guy, his name is-"
"Oh, I did too. He's in my history class. He was the only guy that didn't ask for my number. Maybe he likes to play hard to get. His name is Liam."
"That's the guy I was talking about. He's such a nice guy, he even sat with me during lunch when I was all alone."
"So he is playing hard to get!"
"Pardon?"
"He obviously saw us walk into school today and knew you were my bestfriend. He's just using you to get closer to me. Clever."
"He seemed straight forward to me," I whispered.
"You know I love you but a guy like Liam wouldn't go for a girl like you. It's just facts."
"Yeah, I should've known better."
When I got home I ran straight to my room and cried. What was I thinking? Kendall was right. He'd never want me. Who would? I actually thought a guy liked me. Gosh, I'm stupid. He obviously wants Kendall. Everyone likes Kendall better than me. I'm always forgotten. I'm invisible.
