The Call

It all started with a phone call. Let me take you back exactly 5 years ago.

Ring! Ring! Ring!

It was 1:30 in the morning, and my phone was ringing. I jerked my head up, surprised, and looked at the time. It was far past midnight! Who in their right mind would call at that time? I shrugged it off as some telemarketer and laid my head back down.

But oh, was I wrong, I was so very wrong about that. It was much, much more than a telemarketer.

2:30 AM

I once again awoke to the very same phone ringing. This time, however, it was a different ringtone...

I groggily got up and picked up the phone.

It must be broken or something, I thought.

When I picked up, all there was was static. Endless static...

Faintly in the background, I could hear something high-pitched and frightening. As time passed, it grew louder and closer. It was a scream, a woman's scream! The woman sounded as if she was in a great amount of pain. Shaken to the bone, I hung up the phone, turned it off, and threw it across the room.

No more phone calls for me! No more psychopaths on the other end!

Or so I thought....

One hour later...

Ring! Ring! Ring!

It was the phone! The very same one that I had turned off a mere hour ago.

I ignored the call, covered myself in my bedding, and tried to sleep.

But... It just kept ringing....

It seemed to keep ringing for minutes, but finally it stopped.

In mere minutes I was asleep again, but it would only get worse come morning...
