Chapter 14
"Why are you so smiley?" Amber asked curiously as I walked into class. "No reason" I blushed and quickly busied myself taking out my books and sharpening my pencil. Amber watched me critically for a few moments then exclaimed far to loudly "That is the look of romance." I glared at my fellow classmates who suddenly looked round at us, then directed my intense gaze at Amber. "Can you keep your voice down" I asked then gave a weak smile. "Spill girl" Amber demanded. And so I did.
I replayed all of it. I hadn't seen her since she helped me prepare on Friday night so I with Grace's flirting, and my own shameless flirting with Eric, which led to the fight. Amber was great, and supported me all through my most likely ever so slightly exaggerated recount and cheered far to loudly once more when we made up. I then proceeded to tell her about him dropping me off and Jerry's untimely reappearance.
"WHAT?! HE DIDN'T?! Just you wait until I-" Amber exclaimed hotly. "Amber, what is all this noise about? This disgraceful show obviously is completly unrelated to Romeo and Juliet so I request that you quieten down immediately and proceeed to relate to us the storyline for act 3 which is what all of you should have read by now"? the elderly english teacher demanded. Amber gulped.
"Uh, I was so referring to the play. Have you seen Tybalt's rash actions. No wonder Romeo had to kill him for it. Then the prince goes and banishes Romeo, thus breaking apart the two lovers so soon after first united. It is such a sad story" Amber gasps dramatically. Several people laugh, and Amber sits down, feeling very pleased with herself.
"Ok fine. So you know the basic gist of what is occuring at present. You also seem to be a reasonably good actress. So I propose a challenge to this class" the teacher smirked and we all sat up a little straighter. Her last challenge was who could write the longest essay, with the four shortest essayists having to attend lessons with her during lunchtimes for a fortnight. That meant that most people rambled on about the most ridiculous of topics just to add length to their essay and in the end she decided to pick the four worst essays instead of the shortest. Luckily I wasn't one of them. Jerry was though. He had written the whole essay out, first in english, and then in spanish to double the length of his. The teacher had not been impressed.
"This class will be preforming Romeo and Juliet in the school talent show next month. We will spend all of class time preparing and rehearsing and people with main parts will have to put in extra time after school" A collective groan went around the class and the teacher added "Those with any artistic or technical ability will have the option of working backstage instead" I heard a cheer rise up from Milton's group. No doubt they will be working sound and lighting instead.
"For all those who want main parts, choose a character from your books and learn their lines. We will start auditions in class tomorrow so you can have the rest of the period to practice. Choose one particular scene and learn it off by heart."
"Who are you going to go for Amber?" I asked as people began to converse again. Amber pondered for a moment, then grinned. "I think I did a pretty good job just then, I should go as the narrator" she decided and I rolled my eyes. "Nope. Only Juliet herself is good enough for my highly capable acting abilities" I declared.
"Aww. It will be pretty easy for you to relate to Juliet. You are both kind, determined and love struck" Amber teased and I wacked her over the head with my play book.
"I wouldn't get your hopes up Kim. You aren't pretty enough for Juliet" Lindsay laughed snarkily from a few rows behind me. I turned round to glare at her. "Quiet Lindsay. Atleast I have her characteristics. Last time I checked it was acting, not modelling" I bit back and Amber chimed in. "Plus Kim is so much prettier than you" she added. "You should have seen her on Friday."
"Oh I did. Was she the one yelling at her friend in the garden or locking herself in the toilet?" Lindsay pondered and I snapped. "Actually neither. I was the one kissing him in the library" I replied and a gasp went up from the eavesdroppers.
"Wait. You are meaning to tell me you actually kissed Jack Brewer, Thee Jack Brewer?" Lindsay laughed, slightly unsure of herself. "You certainly aren't his type. Why would he be interested in a girl like you that jumps around a dojo all day when he can have someone like me. Popular, pretty and feminine. Face it Kim. Even if he did kiss you, he was probably just fooling around. Guys as hot as him never take love seriously. They just go around breaking hearts of the silly little girls they hook up with" Lindsay finished, to a cheer from her entourage.
"Jack isn't that shallow" I replied and heaved a sigh of relief as the teacher began lecturing us on the importance of learning lines in comparison to petty fights. As Amber gazed at me concernedly and sympathetically, I buried my head and tried to think straight. Jack wouldn't have been messing with me would he? He sounded so genuine this morning. No, Lindsay was just envious I decided. I hugged myself. She didn't kiss Jack Brewer this morning. I did.
