The wood panelled floor felt so cool, so pleasant on my skin. I smiled, feeling content with the world and everything around me, despite the darkness I was surrounded by. "But..why is it dark? I couldn't help but think to myself curiously. Just as the internal question ended, my eyelids fluttered open on their own and I found myself bathed in light.
The blare of the ceiling light felt soft on my eyes, and I could see the entire room clearly now. As I sat up on the wood floor, I realized I was in a bedroom. The walls were painted a delicate shade of green, and a canopy bed was placed up against one of them, dividing the wall into two perfectly symmetrical pieces. The canopy and bed coverings were a very gentle shade of pink. I scooted over on the floor and leaned against the bed, running my hand across the blanket. It was wonderfully soft and silky to the touch.
I crawled up onto the bed and lied down on my stomach, resting both cheeks in my hands as I examined the rest of the area, a bright grin on my face. There was a bedside table on either side of me, each with a lamp that eminated a soft glow from the bulb. There were two closed windows on the wall opposite the bed; they looked down on what appeared to be an almost-sleeping city. The streets were empty, not a car or human in sight, but a few lights specked a building here and there.
The last thing I acknowledged was a mahogany dresser to my left. It matched the two little tables in color, but the once difference was the mirror that hung just above it, which reflected the entire room. I stared at my own reflection, before noticing a figure behind me. I gasped and turned around, seeing a chubby, older looking woman standing at the bed, to my right. Her eyes were green, and her hair black. It looked as though she hadn't brushed it in days...Her attire was a long, navy blue nightgown that reached down to her knees, and a pair of black, heavy workboots. I wouldn't have thought anything of her if it weren't for the terrifying grin plastered across her face, and those cold, unblinking eyes.
I stared, frozen in fear at the woman before me. She climbed up onto the silky sheets, in front of me, and pushed away one of the hands on my cheek, replacing it with her own. "Eep!" I shrieked and scrambled up into a sitting position, pushing the freezing hand away. I was sitting on my knees, hands at my sides and pressed against the bed, when I saw her smile fade. Suddenly, her head twitched, and her smile reappeared and left once more as she jerked. This continued once, twice...until the lights flickered off and back on again. When I could see again, a bloody kitchen knife had appeared in the strangers hand, and the horrible grin was back once more. "I..I'm going to kill you!" she snickered and raised the knife up.
I quickly rolled out of the way and off the bed, my heart pumping fast. Desperate to protect myself, I slammed open the bottom drawer of the bedside table and found two knives inside. I took up one of them and...she was on my back! Her blood spattered knife was inching closer and closer to my throat..I shoved the handle of my own blade into my mouth, and grabbed onto her wrist. Summoning up all the strength of my being, I pushed the hand away and rolled around, slamming her into the floor.
The woman simply cackled at the pain as I stood up and ran to the bedroom door. I grabbed the doorknob and flung it open. I ran out into what was a dimly lit corridor, with broken glass scattered about the floor and cobwebs here in there. I yelped at the first touch of glass on my feet, my eyes welling with tears, but I shook it off and kept running, the knife still held tightly in my teeth.
It felt like an eternity of running. I was exhausted, and the soles of my feet were a mess of blood and torn muscle, but I continued on, At least the knife that I still hadn't thought to take out from my mouth was muffling my pained cries. I heard a soft giggle a short ways behind me, and pressed on..Just a little further...when I came across a flight of stairs, clear of any glass, and through the darkness I could barely make out a door that I hoped led to the outside world.
I silently thanked whatever deity that was out there and quickly descended the stairs, whimpering as quietly as I could at the feel of weight and wood on the exposed muscle. I was at the very button step, when suddenly...I screamed at the feel of two freezing hands against my back, before faceplanting onto the floor, handle and blade of the knife lodged in my throat. My eyes widened as I shoved my fingers down into my throat and grabbed onto the blade, slicing the tissue of my fingers and esophagus as I forced the knife out of my throat.
I crawled up onto my hands and knees, hacking up mouthfuls of blood onto the cool floor. I looked up, and saw psychopath from the room before. She was grinning maliciously, and I stayed there, coughing and hacking, unable to force my weakened body to move just yet. The woman twitched, her bloody kitchen knife falling to the floor with a loud clang. Her grin had disappeared, replaced with a look of true concern. She sat down on her knees in front of me, brushing my hair back from my face and asking gently "Are you alright?" I spit another mouthful of blood onto floor, and on sudden impulse, flicked the sticky mess up from the floor and into her eyes.
She let out an ear piercing scream and clutched at her eyes, her head twitching and jerking a few more times. I grabbed her kitchen knife with both hands, and while she was blinded, stabbed it as hard as I could into the vein on her neck. She wailed desperately for a couple of seconds, before her form crumbled into a pile of ash on the floor, leaving behind her navy blue nightgown and boots.
My heart pounding, I dropped the knife next to what was left of the woman, and scooted over to the door with my hands, unable to bring myself to stand up on my wounded feet. The door easy swung open, and a cool breeze rolled across my face, through my blood-spattered hair, and disappeared into the hell-hole of a house. I scooted down onto the stone step, sitting on my knees and taking in my surroundings. I was in a beautiful countryside, with grass a deep shade of green that was easily visible in the starlight.
I took a deep breath of the cool night air, blood pooling on the pavement from my bloody soles, and gazed up at the sky. I smiled at the bright, full moon, and it seemed to smile right back down at me.
My eyes suddenly popped open, scanning the white walls all around me. I sat up in bed, remembering quickly where I was. My sister's house, lying on an air mattress in the guest room. I sat up, and pushed my hair back with both hands, running them along the top of my head as I closed my eyes and sighed. "This homesickness is really starting to get to me..."
