Chapter 1 -
She could him screaming. She always could, but she couldn't help him. She always stood frozen, paralysed in fear. It was always the same scenario every time. She could always hear his muffled screams and cries for help; she could always hear him scream her name and see his little body struggle trying to find a way out. She wanted to help him but she never could.
She watches him stop moving, his body slowly starts to burn and her eyes widened, filling with tears that start to leak out of her eyes helplessly. She still can't move a muscle.
"Avril!" She hears. "Avril, wat happened?" The voices is getting louder right beside her. It all a blur of sound and colour and the scenario in front of her fading away and the body floating away with the blur.
"What did you do?" They both scream at him. "Why didn't you help him?"
"What did you do Avril,"she hears again, but it didn't sound like a question, it came out more devastated and disappointed. There was shoving and screaming and now she's on the ground and yet she still can't move. There are a pair of hands on her shoulder shaking her over and over, and now she hears the scream from her mouth.
It finally hits her, the realisation of what she just watched and how she could have prevented it. She screams again loser and starts to shake rapidly until her mind lets go and she blanked out.
"Avril!" He hears, but this time it was a different voice. The hands on him are more gentler, shaking him out of his bad dream.
"Avril, it's okay it was just a bad dream. You were just dreaming it okay."bThe nurse soothes. Only now relised she was screaming and shaking, terrified she tried to calm her down. Her eyes were wet with tears streaming down her face.
"It's just a dream." the nurse soothes comfortingly.
"No it wasn't." She says, shaking her head furiously, pulling her knees to her chest, slowly rocking back and forth.
"It was real."She whispers, terrified.
"Was it the same dream Avril?" The nurse asks softly. A whimper leaves her lips and hold her legs more tightly to herself. She doesn't answer her but just nods slowly.
"We've talked about this remember?"She try's to remind her. "It wasn't your fault."
"Yes! It was!"She yells, warm tears streaking down her face slowly. "It was." She insists. "It was always my fault. I could have -I could have saved her." She rambles mostly talking to herself and rocking back and forth now just wishing to be alone.
The nurse sighs tiredly, used to this happening at least twice a month. She hands Avril a pill and she eyes it wearily.
"No." She shakes her head."No you're trying to hurt me. Those pills will make me forget." She says shaking his head, still rocking back and forth.
"They're only to help you sleep." She insists giving her the pill and handing her a glass of water. "I promise it will only help you sleep. They'll make the nightmares go away. You've had them before remember?"
Avril eyes the pill wearily and stops moving and her mouth is tensing and twitching like always. She try's to slow down her breathing but she can't remember if she's telling the truth or not. She can't remember if the pills hurt him.
"O-okay." She agrees hesitantly putting the pill in her mouth and swallowing it with the water.
"No mare nightmares?" She asks the nurse with hopeful eyes.
The nurse smiles kindly, patting her hand.
"No more nightmares. Now lets get up back to sleep." The nurse said settling her back into bed, turing to turn the light out and exiting the room and shutting the door behind her, locking the door. Avril breathes deeply, her eyebrows crease together in concentration as she try's to slow her breathing and slowly starts to fade to sleep.
