Prologue
My name is not important. To tell you the truth I forgot what my name sounds like. I have been on the run for so long that I forgot what it was I am running from. I don't think I ever really knew what it is I am running from. All I know is that in order to survive I need to keep running.
My name is Elina, at least that is what I am called at the moment. I just turned eighteen, which is what the voice inside my head told me. My only companion throughout the years has been the voice in my head. I know for a fact that without it I would not have made it as far as I have.
At the moment I am living in an apartment and I have a roommate. This place has been my safe haven for a while. I just wish it could have stayed that way for a bit longer.
I was busy applying lip-gloss to my lips, when I felt a trickle of fear go through my body. My body stiffened as a sudden coldness overcame me. Jared, my roommate's boyfriend stormed into my room and closed the door quickly. His eyes were filled with fear and as soon as he locked the door he fell to the floor at my feet and grabbed my shoulders. His fingers were digging into my skin and hurting me, but I ignored the slight pain and just looked at him.
"They killed her." he managed to say as he trembled and then let go of my shoulders. "I tried, Lina, I... I tried to save her." I tuned Jared out as he continued to stutter and mumble through what happened to Amy.
I shook my head and got up from the dressing table. I grabbed the bag I kept in my closet for when the time came for me to move again. I threw in the bare essentials and the stacks of money I kept for emergencies. After I packed my bag I put on my boots and jacket while sitting on my bed.
I looked at Jared and smiled. Amy loved Jared and I owed her. She took me in, helped me get a job and though I barely spoke to her she treated me with kindness. Now that she is dead I will not be able to repay her, but I could save Jared's life.
That and whoever those bastards were they killed the only person I considered a friend.
I heard the front door get kicked in and took the gun out from the nightstand. Taking off the safety I turned to Jared and put a finger to my lips.
If he knows what is good for him, he should know that he needs to stay silent.
"That boy is here." I heard a voice say acidly. "He is not alone."
It was at that moment that I decided to step out of my room. Four pairs of eyes were staring at me as I walked to the kitchen, completely ignoring their stares. That was until I heard a growl.
A man that looked to be in his thirties and like he had been in one too many fights was snarling at me and his eyes changed from light brown to black. A tribal tattoo covered the left side of his neck and went up to his ear. He was shaking and his friends started snarling and growling at me as well.
I think me ignoring them hurt their pride.
"Relax boys," I said calmly. "Why is it that I think you are scared of me?" I said, my voice betraying no emotion, as always. I am not sure if I even know how to properly portray emotion.
"I would think that four grown men like you guys would have started taunting me by now or maybe have killed me. So please tell me what are you waiting for?" Though my words only made them angrier, I kept an eye on them and pretended to not be bothered by them. I took the milk carton out of the fridge and drank directly from the carton. It's not like anyone is going to complain about it anytime in the near future.
"Dan we should get out of here!" The man on the left hand side of the man with the tribal tattoo said. His green eyes were filled with terror as he looked at me and his voice was laced with fear. He had a few similar features to the man with the tattoo, though he looked more like a distant cousin to the man.
"No!" Tattoo guy growled out. "We came here to kill the boy and that is what we are going to do. The girl is an added bonus for us."
"Dan, this is craziness! Can you not smell her?" The man standing at the door said. He looked a lot like Dan, but without the tattoos. He too had brown eyes, the only difference was that his eyes were filled with fear as he looked at me. I wonder if he could smell how different I am to normal werewolves. He might have a gift that I have yet to discover.
"Shut up Dylan!" Dan shouted.
I lifted up my arms and made a show of sniffing myself. "Dude are you trying to say I stink? I was going to just kill you because you murdered Amy, but now I am going to rip you apart." I stated as I glared at Dylan. "And you boys, don't worry your deaths won't be swift. I was just going to shoot you all, but I just changed my mind."
Dan was on me in two seconds after I said that. "Your power is incredible, but I am willing to bet you can't hurt a fly. Princess."
What is he talking about?
What powers?
How does he know?
And why the hell did he call me princess?
I snickered at him and from there things were happening too fast. Two men were on fire screaming in pain. Dan was squirming in front of me, I could feel the pain he was in. I was causing it. I made two of his friends burn to death
I walked up to Dylan and looked into his eyes that were filled with fear. His face was paler than that of a ghost and though he was a full head taller than me, he shrunk so low down to the floor that I had to bend down to get him at eye level with me.
He whimpered when I ran my finger lightly down his face. "Please don't kill me,'' he begged. I brought my lips down to his and it was in that kiss that I saw how he laughed at Amy as she begged for her life. He ripped her throat out and laughed as though it was nothing.
My anger increased and I did as I promised. I ripped him apart.
I walked out of the building and made my way to the bus terminal. I should start looking for a new place to live.
I need a change of identity, I looked through the five fake IDs that I had made and picked Lila Dawn.
As I walked away from the building I heard a howl, my wolf was saying goodbye to the life I had made for myself in this place.
