Chapter 5: Meeting Ponzu

She was contestant #246 with a yellow hat and pink sweater and sea green hair. She looked like my sister just older, my sisters favorite color was pink but she wanted to dye her hair a type of green like I dyed mine purple once I was 13 and she would have had to wear a hat to hide her ears just like I do for mine...if my sister was still alive I'm sure she would look just like this girl. Then I saw Tonpa approach her with a can of that soda and built up my anger so I walked over to them.

"Tonpa why don't you play your trick on someone who has the same mental age as yourself...like a 5 year old!" I said with a low growl.

He started sweating when he saw me and then quietly ran off.

"Thanks but I didn't need your help." she said turning to face me where I saw her green eyes...that was the only thing telling me she wasn't my sister for my sister would've had purple eyes just like me.

"I never said I was trying to help you." I said laughing softly...she is so much of how Maya was.

"So why then?"

"I just don't like that guy." I said as I turned away smiling.

"Then you'd be following him to keep an eye on him instead of the opposite direction." she said stopping me in my place as I started to walk, my smile grew wider as that was the type of reply that I was looking for...a Maya reply. I turned to see her looking intently at me...most likely wanting an answer for why I helped her.

"Alright the. You caught me. I was trying to help you. Your welcome by the way." I said throwing up my hands in defeat.

"Why?"

"Two reasons. First you look like some one I can have a good and intelligent conversation with. As far as the second reason...well I'll tell you later. Are you thirsty? I got some water bottles in my bag here. I stole them from one of the many idiots here." I said walking back to my seat.

"Why wont you tell me the second reason now? And how do I know the water is safe?" she asked as I heard her footsteps following mine.

"It's safe. I wouldn't try to poison you like Tonpa. And I wont tell you until you tell me a little about yourself. Like name and why you are taking this exam?" I said grabbing two water bottles out of my bag then sat down with my back against the wall.

I held the other water bottle out to her and she stared at it and at me in silence before finally speaking again.

"Fine. I'll tell you if you promise to answer all of my questions. No tricks and no beating around the bush. Understand." she said taking the water bottle and seating down next to me.

"I understand."

"I'm Ponzu and I'm taking this exam to become a hunter. So I can travel and learn more about different types of insects and animals...a beast hunter I guess." she said taking the lid off of the water but she didn't take a sip yet.

"Ponzu. That's a nice name. I'm Momoko. The second reason why I choose to help you is because you remind me a lot of my little sister." I told her taking a drink of my water and took note of the 253 person entering.

"Your little sister......how do I know that you're not lying to me about that just as some trick?"

"What would I gain if I lied to you? It's the truth. You asked for the truth so that's what I gave...if you don't believe me that's fine but just know that I'm not looking or need your sympathy." I said looking at my feet.

"Sympathy?....Wait are you saying that your little sister is..."

"Yeah...she's dead. Just like the rest of my family...of my people." I said cutting her off as my voice got softer towards the end.

"Your people?" she asked and I turned to see her looking at me with confusion and curiosity.

"You ask a lot of questions you know." I said laughing a little and remembered that my little sister was the same way whenever I came home from training or a late night walk.

"When I say my people I mean Wolf Demons. There was a total of a 100 of us and we all lived in a village hidden in the forest of a town. My dad was our Alpha leader...the mayor I guess. That's what I meant by my people." I said as I saw her face showed some disbelief but also that she wanted to know more.

"I went into the nearby town to do some shopping for some stuff that our village needed. When I came back they where all dead...It wasn't my turn to go to town. It was my sisters' but she "played sick" to get out of it...That damn Phantom Troupe." I said mumbling the last part.

"Phantom Troupe? Aren't they ruthless thieves that kill and take whatever they want?" she asked scooting a little closer.

I nodded my head.

"So are you here to become a hunter and get revenge?"

"No!...Revenge wont bring my family back. I'm taking the exam as a promise that I made my father a long time ago." I told her turning to look at her as the 315 contestant entered.

"Are you really a wolf demon?"

"Yes." I said lifting up my hat enough to show her my ears then I lowered it back down.

"Wow!...wait no tail?"

"I can hide my tail. Just like you hide bees in your hat." I said pointing to it.

"What!? How did you?!"

"Simple! I can hear them buzzing. As a wolf all my senses are heightened more than any humans. Again I don't care if you believe me or not but if you'd like to take me up on my offer of being some one I can talk to during this exam then I'll help you whenever you need it." I said leaning back against the wall as the 320th person entered.

"I don't need help. I'm tough. I can make it through this myself!" she said leaning her back against the wall.

"Well my offer will still be open the whole time. Just come up to me at anytime...but be careful I sense a strong blood lust. He'll kill you without thinking twice about it." I said standing up and putting my jacket and bag on.

"He?"

"His scent. I can tell by scent their age give or take a few years, gender, if they have family nearby and if they are human or not. I'm going to walk around.

"Wait!" she said grabbing my arm and stopping me.

"Yes?" I asked turning to her.

"I'd like to accept your offer. It might be good having a wolf for a friend in this exam." she said smiling.

"I agree. Then I'll be right back."

"Where are you going?"

"To find out who exactly has that blood lust...that is slowly growing stronger." I told her than walked into the large crowd.
