"Move over!" I yell at Jason.
I shove past him and feel around the door for a crack. When I find one in the side I lift my fire poker. I poke it into the crack and wrench it over. I'm not strong enough.
"Here let me help." Jason offers.
I move over and let him get at it. I can hear the metal screeching and the bolts giving way.
Suddenly I weird smell comes in. Not wet, soggy tunnel smell. But something stronger. More acidic. The fumes!
"Jason hurry" I will him to hurry the best I can while holding my breath. The light beam in growing and the metal is screaming.
Finally after what seemed like forever the door gives way. It clatters to the ground and I jump back in surprise. The light burns through my squinting eyes. After hours underground, it has that affect on you.
"I'll climb up first then I can pull you up"
"Okay" I reply.
Jason jumps up out s the hole so gracefully I wonder how it human. He pulls me out of the hole and my blonde hair shimmers in the sunlight.
All the plants have shriveled up and died. Since a sciences facility had a 'problem' when one of their test experiments glass bottle broke in California, the world has been waiting for it own destruction. They had invented a new super germ and one of the scientists dropped the bottle. The germs escaped through the vent system and had been spreading through people. It has been four months since the accident and nearly all if the United States has been infected. The people who haven't caught the deseise call the infected 'Nieumarli'. Some people say that there are only 25% of the United States not infected or killed. My parents where kill by the monsters. The thought of my parents makes my stomach twist.
"Are you okay?" Jason asks me.
I forgot he was here.
"Umm... Yeah just thinking of my parents."
"Did they umm..."
"Yeah there dead."
"Mine got turned. I will never forget walking into the kitchen and finding my parents watching me with with blank white eyes."
I fell silent. It would be better dead than infected. The illness feed on your mind. Slowly driving you mad until you die of insanity.
We continue walking in silence. Down the street to a hard wear store.
"I'm gonna break this window and we have to get gas masks. And better weapons then a chunk of metal."
I look down at my stick now it looks less intimidating then before.
"Good plan"
Jason breaks the window with a rock and we carefully climb in. Inside I head to the gun section. There are only a few things left. I grab two that are small and shoot long sharp bullets. I grab one more that has a long barrel and sprays smoke that makes you pass out. I also grab as many bullets and refills as I can carry.
I walk through the store looking for Jason. I pass a backpack section and desire to grab two for us the carry our guns and ammo. I'm strolling around the store looking for anything else we might want to keep. I'm about to grab some dried meat for a snack along the way when Jason bolts around the corner. He grabs my shoulder and pulls me along with him. I stumble but his grip keeps me on my feet.
"What are you doing!" I exclaim.
"The Nieumarli..." He puffs. "There here"
I swing my backpack over my shoulder and give him his.
When we get to the window Jason tells me to go first. I squirm though the hole in the glass when suddenly I feel a slow wet pain speed across my stomach. I slowly look down towards my tummy and see shards of glass sticking through my stomach. I try and scream but no sound comes out. When I try to move forward the pain becomes unbearable.
"Jason! I'm stuck"
"What do you mean your stuck!" He says with obvious irritation in his voice.
"I mean I can't move without being cut more"
I hear glass shattering next to me. When I look over Jason is climbing through the next window over.
"You're not going to leave me here are your?"
"Yes, I am. I was going to leave you here stuck in glass to be eaten by Nieumarli and escape for my self."
"Just get me out"
"Fine"
He takes another rock and hammers at the glass above and on the sides of me. I hoist my self up higher and fall out of the window.
We sprint down the winding streets until we get to the grocery store. We need to pack lightly so we can move fast. We'll hit other city's on the way right?
All the windows in the store are smashed and the place looks empty. People sure get around fast in times like this. We decide to stick together and start at the canned food isle.
All that's left is canned tomatoes and mushrooms. We grab what's left which is about 4 of each and keep looking. The only place with food is the fruit and vegetable section and those don't help much. We grab some fruit snacks and jerky and head out. It's hard to keep up to Jason's long legs so I'm sort of jogging to keep up.
"Where are we going?" I ask Jason.
"There is a shed outside of town. I'm hoping its still abandoned. If not..."
"Hoping ?" I interrupt. " And if its not?"
" Then i don't know."
