The day it happened was like any other day. I drove sister and I to school just like always leaving the car one at a time so we wouldn't be seen together. When I got inside I went to my first period class which was Advanced Sign Language. My mom is deaf so I already know Sign Language I just wanted an easy A.
When I walked in no one was there, the flu was going around and the other four people in the class were sick. "Hey Matt how you doing kiddo?" The teacher Mr.Cahill asked. "Hey Rob I'm good how's the wife?" I asked him. I knew almost all the teachers first names. "Oh she is great, and she is due in a month."
"So have you picked out the little one's name yet?"
He is having a baby boy. "Yes we have his name, it will be Oliver Clayton. He is going to be named after my father and Vicki's great grandfather. "Oliver Clayton Cahill, not to bad I think it's a great name."
The rest of the day was just the normal boring classes... That was until lunch halfway through lunch. It started of normal. Just sitting by a bunch of the football team.
"Hey War, I have a question for you", my best friend James turned to my suddenly. "Shoot", was all I said to James before taking a bit out of my apple. "How can you manage having two hours of football practice and having all advanced classes and still have straight A's?" He asked while everyone at the table was staring at me. "They really aren't that hard if you do the work dickhead." I commented
"Wait you have all advanced classes?" Another football player asked, his name was Zayn. "Dude he has advanced Sign Language, Advanced Calculus, Ap History, Ap Chemistry, Some super special English class, Advanced Latin or something, and some really weird cooking class." James told Zayn." That is the weirdest schedule I have ever heard of", Zayn says while staring at me in shock.
I was about to make a smartass comment to Zayn but then his phone went off. It was a text message "Hey, you know Matthew Warren... he is a fag." He heard phones going off all around him and saw the faces around him. How had this happened? Who found out he thought to himself. "War? Tell me that's not true, tell me your not a fag!" James exlaimed looking at me desperately hoping it wasnt true.
Scrambling to get all my things together and rushed out of the cafeteria I felt the stares of the two hundred kids in the cafeteria as I left. No matter what I did or what I said no one would believe me fear overtook me. Just get though the day.
At the end of the day when I finally worked up the courage to go to my locker I find the word FAGGOT written on it. I turned around to see if I was about to be attacked only to see the other kids in the hallway just stairing like I was some freakshow. I quickly grabbed my things walking as fast as I could just trying to get to coach's office my mind already made up. The new gossip about the gay quarterback had spread throughout the school like wildfire.
He rushed through the gym to the coaches office knowing what he had to do. He knocked on the door. "Come in, the coaches deep voices sounded." Taking a deep breath Matthew opened the office door. Before the coach could say anything Matt blurted "I can't play anymore!"
"Why because you're gay? Matthew just because you are gay doesn't mean you have to quit football", Choach responded. "Coach you don't understand the team won't want me now, they will beat me, they will NOT let me play with them. Even if I did stay on the team it definitely wouldn't be safe for me change in the locker room."
"Listen here boy, the team may not want you but they need you. You are the best player the team has and the best player the school has ever seen you can't just give up because you will get a little hell for liking guys. Now I want you to play and I will make it clear to the team you are not to be beaten up or abused in any way or they will be off the team", The coach said with an air of finalty.
"I'm going to loose my best friend, my team, my place at the top of the school, my thrown, and it is not going to be a little hell, all of hell's fire will rain down on my head." I cried
"That is not a good reason to just give up and roll over, if you quit on them they will loose their games and they will treat you even worse. If you quit you won't just be forgotten you will be bullied worse than any other kid in this shitty school." The coach argued.
"Matthew I want to see you to succeed and on that field after school when practice starts. Just change in my office because you are right you won't be safe in the locker room." Was all the coach said before leaving the office.
I am so dead.....
