"Hey. It's Ashton right?"
He thought he would never see her again, maybe she wasn't actually there, maybe his mind was playing tricks on him. It wouldn't be the first time.
"Hello? Anyone in there?" She waved a hand in front of his face, grabbing his attention.
"Uh, y-yeah. Sorry. Do you need a drink? I'm on my break now but my colleague will get you anything you want." He finally spoke whilst rubbing the back of his neck and refusing to meet her eyes.
"Oh, good I came at the perfect time" She claps her hands together enthusiastically "want to get a coffee with me?" Her question completely catching Ashton off guard, why would she want to get coffee with boring old me when she obviously could be out doing something so much more adventurous, he thought. "Well I guess your silence is you need more time to think about it, but whilst you thinking about I'm going to get my drink and whilst I do that could you go reserve that table in the corner? Thanks" She patted his shoulder and walked away to the counter. Ashton had already made up his mind as soon as the question left her lips. Of course he was going to have a coffee with her, the more time he could spend with her the better. So he made his way to the table of her choice and waited anxiously for her to arrive with her mug of shitty coffee.
After a couple of minutes he looked up and realised she was only third in line, Callie wasn't the quickest at completing orders and Ashton felt bad leaving her to work alone just as the little shop started filling up due to it being around twelve o'clock. As he was waiting he had the sudden urge to draw so he grabbed his sketching pencils and pad and sketched the first thing he laid his eyes on. It just so happened that was the mysterious girl waiting in line for something that was not worth waiting three minutes for. He started right away, desperate to capture how she looked in that moment before she noticed him staring at her. He tried so hard to get her small nose perfect but she itching it and twitching that he struggled to get it at the right angle. No matter what her just couldn't get her nose right, everything else seemed perfect, he had captured the small blush on her cheeks from the cold outside, the way her slightly wavy hair tumbled out of her beanie, he even caught the gleam on her round glasses where the light reflected off them. Her nose annoyed Ashton as he just wasn't able to draw it no matter how hard he tried, so he gave up and shoved his pencils back in their case and everything back into his bag, slightly angrily.
"Let's see it then" she startled him, he hadn't even realised she was at the front of the line.
"See what?" he questioned even though he already knew what she was talking about.
"The drawing obviously! Did you really think I didn't see you?" she asked, raising an eyebrow and bringing her large mug of coffee to her lips. "eughh, that is bitter" she made a face as if she had tasted something extremely sour.
"And people wonder why I never use my staff discount card" he joked, trying to keep conversation away from the drawing. It would be so embarrassing for him if she knew he had drawn her. Well tried to draw her, he was still annoyed by her perfect little nose. Never had he met a nose he couldn't draw. "So, what is your name, you never told me last night" he asked, still curious as to what to call her. She shrugged her shoulders and held the mug in her hands, not making eye contact with him. "Do you not know your name?" now Ashton was really confused.
"No it's not that, I just haven't decided yet" she shrugged again and took a large sip of the bitter coffee even though it was obvious to anyone she found it disgusting.
"What do you mean 'you haven't decided yet'?" he asked staring her in the eyes thinking that if he did maybe she would actually come up with an answer that actually made sense. "Everyone has a birth name, what do people call you when they need you or something?"
"People don't need me" She glared at him, he had hit a sore topic and realised he should shut up before she leaves. There was an awkward silence that made Ashton feel as though there was a heavy fog that smothered him, stopping him from making any sound at all. "So, that drawing. What was it of? You seemed pretty concentrated on it." she placed her half full mug down and rested her head on her hands, staring straight at Ashton making him feel uncomfortable, yet comfortable at the same time. He felt as though he was being interrogated but at the same time he loved that she was looking at him because it gave him an excuse to look at her murky green eyes and try and decipher the story behind her.
"It was nothing. Just a silly sketch of a sunset, that's all." He looked anywhere but at her.
"Well, I smell bullshit" she smiled and swooped down to grab his bag sitting by his feet.
"Give that back!" He almost shouts, if she sees the sketch he might just die on the spot. He reaches for his backpack that is now sitting on her lap.
"Say please" she says sternly but doesn't manage to keep a smile off her face.
"Just give it back!" he reaches over again, his arms tapping the sides of the mug of coffee.
"I said say please!" She laughs, hugging the backpack that is oh so precious to the boy across from her.
"Give it ba-" he starts to reach over again but this time his hand hits the large coffee mug that's still half full. He knocks it over, straight on to her lap. It instantly soaks into her grey shirt and dribbles down her black ripped jeans.
"fuck"
