As I opened my eyes, pain shoots through my body and creeps up my spin. as I look up at the sky its grey and its raining black. No not rain, ash. i try to move remembering what had happened, but my body is covered by heavy logs. I am trapped. every time I try screaming for my brother, ashes fill my mouth with a horrible taste.
“LEO...LEO!” I keep screaming his name but no answer. I imagine the worse. Him... gone forever. It takes me a while to pry the log off, but I finally free myself.
I lie and think as i catch my breath, where is Leo?
Chapter 1
I open the door of my brother’s room to find him sitting on the floor crying.
“Leo, whats wrong?”. I wait but he doesn’t say anything. I sit beside him on the floor and give him a hug. “Come on, I bet what ever is making you sad I can cheer up with a nice, warm cup of hot chocolate. How would you like that? I will put those big marshmallows that you love. Come on lets go downstairs.” He doesn’t move a muscle.
“Im scared Raven. I don’t want us to be separated from each other. Your the only family I have.” He says with tears running down his face. I can see that even the biggest marshmallow would help him now. I had to give a pep talk, which i’m horrible at even if he is my brother. I always say the wrong things, but i’ll have to give it a shot.
“Oh Leo we will never be...” I was cut short from the noise of the bugal from outside. It pierces my eardrum and sends a ringing sound through my head. We both know what it means and always prayed not to ever hear the sound. I look at Leo’s face, sadness has been replaced by fear behind his eyes. Fear that this would be the last time he sees my face again.
Chapter 2
“Run Leo!! Faster!! We have to get to the bunker!” As we run down the stairs the ground shakes and slows us from running. I glance over the window in the hallway that we pass. Flames engulf everything outside; the bakery, the general store, even the church down the road. All gone.
We reach the front door, Leo cuts himself on the broken glass from lights that burst from above us. His whole ankle was covered in red. I take my jacket and rap his ankle.
“Get on my back” I command as I kneel down. Once I feel his weight on my back i begin to run. I run outside to the courtyard and see the dead body of Miss. Clerey our “mother” at the orphanage.
“Leo close your eyes. Everything Is going to be ok.” I lied we weren’t ok.
Chapter 3
“LEO” I scream as i sit up sweating from a bad dream. Its morning now, but i can’t see into the distance. A fog has rolled in when i was asleep.
I stand up brushing the ashes from my clothes. I notice a burn on my right shoulder.
“AW” as I try covering the burn with my shirt sleeve. Fire had burned through my shirt leaving a whole with singed edges. My skin hurts when anything come in contact with it. I cover it, dealing with the pain and begin walking towards what looked like Area 14, my home town.
As i walk closer I see half burned buildings and bodies of people i knew my whole life. I find myself crying when i see the bodies of the more familiar faces; Iro the baker and his wife Cora. I remember they always gave me and Leo a big cupcake to share every time we stopped in.
My memories were stopped by a sound that emerged from my stomach. I needed food badly. I walked past the bodies to the bakery that looked promising.
