What the Water Gave Me - A Florence and The Machine Songfic
Time it took us,
To where the water was,
That's what the water gave me,
She stared up from the cold and dark bottom. It was like she was paralysed, and screaming didn't do anything but waste the short time she had left. Soon, reality would set in, and she would start to disappear and fade into the darkness that was slowly taking over her world. She couldn't feel anything but the coldness of the blue, and much sadness, knowing that nothing could have been changed, while a former friend slowly walked towards her.
And time grows quicker,
Between the two of us,
He watched with delight, he enjoyed seeing her writhe in pain. She wondered, 'what did I do to deserve this?'
The figure knew, that maybe if her family hadn't let this happen to him, he wouldn't have done it to her, yet he didn't worry about getting caught, or the lights finding him, as he was not living, and only a figure in her slowly fading mind. He was just an illusion, there to confuse her, there to make her life hard.
Oh my love don't forsake me,
Take what the water gave me,
She begged and pleaded with the look in her glassy eyes, whereas the figure was not interested, he could not save her now. The pain in her eyes was a sad
pain, and it was like she knew what was coming next, while believing that she could be up there once more. He looked at her and said, 'you could have saved me, but no, there was nothing you could do.' The girl was confused by this, as her mind was clouding over and could not understand even the simplest things.
Lay me down,
Let the only sound,
Be the overflow,
Pockets full of stones,
He remembered that day. His mind was blurry, he couldn't breathe, and all he could see was the deepest black he had ever seen, yet nothing could be done. What was only meant to be a harmless prank resulted in an unnecessary death. Sabotage turned into murder, and the lives of those involved were never returned to a state of peace as it had been before. Trying to reach the top resulted in losing consciousness, while the angels guided him towards a light without trying to convince him not to go, not to fight, not to stay.
Lay me down,
Let the only sound,
Be the overflow,
Her mind had clouded over almost fully now, and the only thing she could hear was the constant flow, but she could not remember where it was or how to describe it. It was torture, trying to remember what it was, yet the fog was blocking her train of thought, and something that would have come so quickly before was now a struggle to even think about what sound was, but she was determined.
And oh, poor Atlas,
The world's a beast of burden,
You've been holding on a long time,
He once again looked at her, and stared into her eyes. Her eyes were blue, filled with sadness and misery, yet this did not stir regret or pity in his cold heart. He heard footsteps, and quickly went somewhere higher to watch.
"Oh my god!" he heard a voice repeat, and looked at the woman with pity. Oh, if only she knew about how it had happened. She repeated it several times, until a dark haired man ran out, and screamed.
And all the longing,
All the ships are left to rust,
That's what the water gave to us,
He ran inside and grabbed a small device and frantically paced around. The figure watched with delight, his cold heart dancing inside. The girl lay still and looked at him, saying with her eyes, "Why did you do this!?" She could barely make it out, but the man was screaming into the device, consisting of words like 'not breathing, still'. Tears streamed down the woman's face, while she whimpered in a corner.
So lay me down,
Let the only sound,
Be the overflow,
Pockets full of stones,
The flowing sound was now gone, and replaced with a high pitched whining that hurt her fragile mind. She wondered how much longer it would be before she could no longer realise what was happening. She once again tried to escape, yet her body was failing to move, she was tied down by her mind, and it was failing. Her eyes flickered around when somehow there was a figure next to her, lifting her, raising her body off the bottom, out of the darkness, yet her eyes were fixed on the two crying figures standing away from her.
'Cause they took your loved ones,
And returned them in exchange for you,
But would you have it any other way?
Would you have it any other way?
He looks at her fragile, pale body being wheeled away. Nothing would have changed what he did. They did it to him, he does it back. Maybe she'll forgive him when she meets him, although she might go up, she might go down. Their screams were overpowering, yet he follows suit.
Cause she's a crueller mistress,
And a bargain must be made,
They were suddenly there. She's wheeled out, her eyes glassy and scared, but she's a fighter. She's nothing but an open book to him, but he can see she's getting weaker. What was a world of darkness is now nothing but a world of bright lights. He can sense it, she's getting closer to the end. It'll be more peaceful for her, he thinks, smiling.
But oh my love don't forget me,
When I let the water take me,
Suddenly the beeping goes ballistic. She's tired of fighting. She's giving up, but they refuse, saving her life is their job. Her life flashes before her eyes, she smiles to herself. It's gone too quickly, she thinks. Thinking is hard, but she manages it.
"Love you," she says hoarsely, and then she's gone.
Gone.
