"What do you mean by brace yourself?" I asked in a worried tone. I started to feel an uneasiness in my stomach.
"Your sister.... Your sister has cancer." She said quietly. Feeling light headed I backed up and sat on the edge of my bed. My sister, the sister that I just found out about, has cancer. I felt overwhelmed with mixed emotions, debating where I should feel happy that I found a sister or whether I should be upset for my mother telling me that I have a sister, but is in critical condition because of cancer. I brought up my knees and buried my head in my arms and started to sob. Feeling a hand on my back, I looked up at my mother and embraced her, burying my head into the crook of her neck and sobbed harder. I felt her rub my back, trying to her best to calm me down. "I'm sorry, dear." I hear her mutter.
It was next morning, I woke up to a saturday morning. I felt like a zombie, due to the fact that I barely got any sleep, staying on the bed looking up at the ceiling. My ceiling was supposedly designed to be like the the stars outside, but all I could see was white blurry dots on a dark blue wall. Finally, I decided to get out of bed. I sat up, rubbing my eyes I yawned and moved my legs to the side of the bed, where I slid my feet into a pair of fuzzy purple slippers. The scent of bacon wafted through the air, my stomach growled and I quickly stood up and walked to the kitchen following the scent.
My mother and father were both sitting down in the dining room. My father was too focused into his newspaper, while drinking his coffee, to realize that I came down. My mother on the other hand automatically looked up and greeted me. "Good morning sweetheart, come sit and eat with us." She said happily. How she knew that I was coming down, I had no idea. It was weird what motherly instincts can do, it's like that know everything.
"Good morning mom, dad." I said with a smile and sat down. In front of me was a plate of waffles with bacon on the side and a glass of milk. My stomach growled louder, I started to eat, digging in the delicious food. I look up to see my mom and dad looking at me, I looked back at them and gave my mother a satisfying thumbs up.
Putting the dishes away, I hear my mother clear her throat. " Athena, dear. Go get ready, we're going to see your sister today remember?"
I nodded and rushed to get ready.
We are now currently in the parking lot of the hospital, I stare at the window, looking at the huge building outside. The building that has my sister is currently in.
"Athena." I hear my mother call. "Are you coming?"
Taking one more look at the hospital, I take a deep breath and open the door of the car. Walking out, I felt my mother grab my hand. Looking at her she smiles and I give her a weak smile back. I was more nervous than excited, I have queasy feeling in my stomach. We walked inside the hospital, a few minutes later we got to our destination. Room 124. I started at the room number, wondering how my sister would react. Does she even know who I am? I wondered. My mother gripped my hands and opened the door. I took a deep breath and walking towards the bed. I saw figure lying down on the bed. As I walk closer, I saw the resemblance, we both had brunette hair and green eyes similar to our birth mother. The only thing that sets us apart was that she was very fragile looking. Tears started to fill my eyes as I grab hold of her hands, she flinched at my touch and turned to look at me.
