Dark, it was so dark. I had been walking in the woods and had lost track of time. The trees hid the moon's light. I couldn't even see a few feet in front of me! I heard the crickets singing, the frogs croaking, and the owls hooting. Usually I felt calm and peaceful in the woods, but not today. Now, I feel like somebody's watching me. All of a sudden, my name was called out in a whisper.
"Miranda..." I froze, my heart beating loudly in my ears. "Follow my voice, Miranda," the voice whispered.
"Hello?" I asked as I searched around me for the owner of the voice. Growls echoed throughout the forest. I flinched when I saw the culprit. It looked like a decaying, demonic dog. Decaying flesh was hanging freely from his face and body. Its eyes were glassy like the dead with drool and blood falling from its mouth. I shot off like a bullet in the opposite direction, away from the whispers, hoping it would lead me away from the monster behind me.
Ragged breaths came from my lips as I jumped over logs and roots sticking out of the ground. I could hear the dog running behind me. I glanced back, causing me to trip on a tree root. As I tumbled to the ground, I scraped my hands and knees.
"Ouch!" I grimaced in pain.
"Open the door....Open the door!" the voices began in a whisper that crescendoed into a scream.
The door was embedded in a tree. It was a red door covered by thick silver roots and a red trim. Thick fog seeped from the cracks of the door leaving me shivering. I was in awe by the door. It was beautiful. I wanted to see what could be behind such beauty. As I got closer, a chill ran through me, causing my hair to stand on end. The voices became louder as I got closer and closer to the door. Slowly, I grabbed the handle. The door creaked open to a long dark hallway.
All I saw was fog. It was dark, but the fog glowed an eerie white, lighting my way. Farther down the hall I began to see more doors of different shapes and sizes. The voices lead me past the doors and down another hall. There was a single door at the end. It looked like a regular door compared to the first one. I opened the door not expecting what I saw. It looked like a murder scene. Blood splattered the floor and walls. Dismembered body parts scattered around.
Something touched my foot. I looked down and what I saw was disgusting. It was a person's head. I let out a blood curdling scream.
"Hello? Who's there," a voice asked from the shadows. The voice was slightly high pitched, showing it was definitely a woman.
"I'm sorry, but I seem to be lost," I said as she walked out in the open. She was beautiful yet not at the same time.
She had extremely pale skin that made her veins stick out like a sore thumb. Her hair was long, curly and the color of fire. I noticed her eyes were pitch black sitting atop her hollow cheeks. She wore a black flowing dress that hugged her figure. I heard a growl from behind me, causing me to scream.
"Don't worry. That's just Damien, my hellhound." She spoke calmly.
"He chased me all the way from the woods! How could I not be scared!" I shouted angrily. She clicked her tongue and the hellhound ran to her side.
"That's because I told him to," she said while petting Damien. My stomach twisted into knots.
I licked my chapped lips nervously. "Why would you do that?" I asked with a shaky voice.
"Because you're dinner," she said with a crazed grin on her face. Before I knew it I was running back out of the room.
The hallways seemed to be forever changing. I tried to open the door closest to me, but it was locked. I began to sob, as I knew my death was coming. No, I couldn't stop now. There's no going back and I don't plan on losing. I could hear her heels clicking against the floor, causing an echo. I pulled a bobby-pin from my hair.
"I need to hurry," I whispered, twisting it around. I felt sick. My face was clammy, hands were shaky, and my heart felt like I had ran a marathon. Finally, I heard a click from the lock. I slammed the door behind me and locked it. Just in time too.
I put my hand over my mouth to smother my loud breathing. I listened to her echoing steps getting closer, closer, and closer; till the woman stopped in front of the room I was in. Her nails running down the door sounded like nails on a chalk board. She started to bang on the door and a loud ear-piercing sound came from her mouth. I threw my hands over my ears, letting out a shriek of my own.
"Leave me alone!" I shouted over and over again. Till finally the banging stopped. A sigh of relief fell from my lips as I sat against the door. I hadn't realized until now that it was dark, so I grabbed the lighter out of my pocket to light it. After a few flicks the flame burst to life and what I saw was not what I hoped for. The nameless woman's face was in front of mine. Blood trailed from her mouth as she smiled. I couldn't breathe, I couldn't move, and I couldn't blink.
"Time to die," she giggled uncontrollably. Then I heard a heart wrenching scream. That scream came from me.
A few minutes later, the screaming from the room finally stopped. All was silent, as blood pooled out from under the door. The door slowly opened with a long, loud creak. The nameless woman walked out from the room leaving bloody footprints on the floor. Blood dripped down her face as she looked down at Damien.
"Don't worry sweetie. I left some for you," she said licking the blood from her lips. Damien ran into the room to finish the remains of the young girl, Miranda; his growl intertwining with his masters laugh that echoed throughout the night. The woman's hunger has been satisfied, but for how much longer?
