Vic’s POV
I paced back and forth backstage, warming up my vocals and shaking my hands back and forth in an attempt to get rid of the nerves. Jaime was in the corner tuning his bass and Tony was across the room tuning his guitar. Mike was practicing his drums on the edge of a table.
“You guys are on in five!” our tour manager called out to us.
The four of us huddled together and began clapping rhythmically, beginning our pre show ritual.
“Hey Jaime!”
“What?”
“The devil.”
“Huh?”
“The devil lives everywhere. Hey Vic!”
“Huh?”
“The devil.”
“Yeah!”
“The devil lives everywhere. Hey Mike!”
“Whiskey.”
“The devil.”
“Coke.”
“The devil lives everywhere. Hey Tony!”
“Huh?”
“The devil.”
“Hmm?”
“The devil lives everywhere. P-T-V! WOO!”
We gave each other high fives and finished warming up before running onstage. Even though this was our first tour and our first real exposure, the crowd was going crazy. I ran up to my mic.
“How are you guys doing tonight?!” I called out into the mic. The crowd cheered in response, and I couldn’t help but smile. “Alright, my name’s Vic, and this is Tony, Jaime, and Mike. And we’re called Pierce the Veil!” More cheering. “Now before we start, I would like to thank two very important and special people that we wouldn’t be here today if it weren’t for them, our very good friends, Dakota Reese and Audrey Parker!”
The crowd continued cheering, and for a moment I spaced out, thinking about how much I missed Dakota and how bad I felt that I couldn’t get ahold of her. I quickly shook my head to remove that thought from my brain; right then I had to focus on the show.
Mike hit his drumsticks together four times and we all started playing Disasterology. I bounced up and down on my toes, getting into the rhythm of the music.
I laid down.
I drank the poison the poison then I passed the fuck out.
Now let me tell you ‘bout the good life.
As we continued on with the set, it seemed as though after every song we finished, more and more people were cheering for us. It was a great feeling, knowing that we were actually getting somewhere with what was once a bunch of young guys playing for fun in a garage.
As our set ended and we exited the stage, I was greeted by Jenna. She ran at me with her arms spread open and pulled me into a giant hug.
“You guys totally killed it!” she exclaimed, giving the rest of the guys high fives.
Jenna had been my friend for the longest time, but somewhere along the way we lost contact. Just the other day, she approached me after one of our shows she attended and it was like we had been best friends the entire time. She pulled me away from the buses the night we met up and we went on a walk.
