Chapter 4
I looked all around myself as the harsh bright light flashed into my pupils.
“She’s awake!” One of the workers shouted to my mother.
“Thank god.” She replied as she ran to my side.
All I could do was nod and blink thinking of what just happened to me. My mirror was cracked with pieces falling out of it. I looked down at my hands to see scarlet coloured blood trickle down my fists. Blood was smeared on the part of the mirror that I must have punched. The men started to walk away after a few minutes. My mother asked me over and over of what happened but all I could do was say I was fine, the memory was all but a blur.
That morning everything went smooth, the workers were finishing quicker than we imagined. The house looked more modern by the hour. I walked up the stairs thinking of that door at the end of the hallway. It was all locked up until the door swung open and an icy breeze touched my face and a low moan came from the top of the set of stairs that led to the attic. For a minute I was hesitant but I brought up my bravery to go in the darkest part of the house. Luckily there was day light and it wouldn’t be so dark up there. I was wrong, it was dark due to the furniture that was covering the windows and I only had a little light that I found on the stair case on the way up.
“What have I gotten into this time?” I asked myself.
“I know I have gotten into a lot of stupid things on my life but this one tops it off!” I thought to myself.
The room was full of signs that said “Oxford Home for the Disabled” it sounded more like the things you see for a mental instated or something like that anyway. I looked over to the right to pick up a small book it looked as if it was a sign in booklet. I flipped to the first page to read “Doctor Henderson office sign in” and a bunch of names where a cross out with red ink and also to remark was a sequence of numbers at the end of the page.
“Why would there be names in this book but all the names are crossed out with red ink?” I thought once more to myself.
Also I found some medical stuff, but not a lot, I looked all over the place but nothing really looked that interesting besides the signs that made me ponder, until my mother called me, so I rushed my way down the steep stairs and slammed the door shut so it didn’t look as if I was up there.
“Mom what’s, up….” My voice trailed off as I looked into the finished kitchen.
“I know right it looks amazing!” She screeched with joy.
My jaw flung open to see cherry wood cabinets, stainless steel appliances, hard wood flooring and more, I couldn’t believe that I was living in here. Well maybe not exactly living in the kitchen, but you get it right heh. I started to walk into the newly redone kitchen, I opened and closed the French door fridge and also opened more of the items in there too. Small things amuse me somehow but all my mother could do is chuckle while I ran around looking and pointing at the floor and windows.
Later in the afternoon my mother grinded the whole time she was cooking. She was making rice, vegetables and some chicken my favourites. My mouth longed to taste the crispy chicken, my mouth watered once she placed the plate in front of me .After that she walked off back into the kitchen to grab something I presumed. To be polite I waited for her to come and sit with me but oddly she would have came back by now what was she up to? I jumped out of my seat and ran into the kitchen to see nothing not a single sole. I light flashed on in the bathroom at the side of the kitchen. I cautiously walked over to the bathroom. I turned the nob and pushed on the door, once I opened to door I looked around to see nothing I rubbed my eyes just in case that they were playing tricks on me but not this time. I literally saw nothing odd to think that the lights would turn on all by itself. Out of the darkness of the kitchen I hand came out of nowhere and grabbed my shoulder. The clod grip made me let out a most horrendous horror screech only to turn around to see, my mother.
“Hold your horses. You look as if you saw a ghost.” She gave me worried look.
I felt a pang of relief surge though my body. I was so glad it was her and not some creepy ghost with menacing eye waiting to suck out my sole.
“I’m ok I was just looking for you.” I tried to change the subject.
“Well to tell you the truth I thought I left the tap running in the bathroom upstairs.” She replied.
“Well let’s just sit down and eat.” I said while raping my skinny arms around my mother’s shoulders.
We sat and ate in peace for the time we had together.
The only thing you could hear was the scraping of the silverware on the white slick plates. I didn’t mind though even though I kept on doing to get the last pieces of chicken off my plate. My mother stood up from where she was siting, she pushed the seat in and walked slowly to the kitchen sink. The splashing of the water hitting the plate made me get up to put also my plate into the sink too. Heading to the kitchen I washed the plates and put away the left overs. Mother had seemed to have gone to bed it was 8:45pm odd it was early for her to be off to bed at such a time.
I looked over at the clock 11pm I must of woken up in the middle of the night but why I didn’t need to go to the washroom nor was I hungry. I ripped the blankets from my bed to check on my hamster the cage was silent, too silent.
“Hey buddy?” I whispered.
There was no replied not even a squeak. It was so dark that I couldn’t see my own hand in front of my hand let alone see the cage. I reached over to the lamp next to me. The flash of the light blinded me I let out a faint hiss. I watched in horror I dropped to my knees, it couldn’t be true, it wasn’t him was it? There laided Dr.Gilkinstyne his head chopped off his limp body. Blood covered the cage someone must have did this to him couldn’t have done that to himself. 5cm from his body was his head, his eyes clouded staring off into the starry night sky. I...I loved him so mush why did everything I loved did died? My father left me and my pet died. Fury swelled up inside me and slowly died away tears rolled down my face as I dropped to the floor. I could feel someone smiling at my pain. I turned to see nothing but I knew that they were here. The mocked me for my feelings, that I had feeling, that they were cold as the coldest heart. Playing with my mortal self, mocking me I’ll show them. Fury roes in my through if I could I would chop their heads to they could rot in hell.
“Come at me give me your best shot!” I yelled loud enough for them to hear me.
“We’ll bring it youngin and we’ll make sure you never came here.” A voice whispered into my ear with a hiss at the end of it.
Shocked that they replied to me but at the same time what would they do to me or worse my mother. The hisses faded away leaving me with my dead hamster, so the war has begun.
