Something Wicked
I pressed my boot to his chest as I kicked him to the ground, knocking the wind out of him. I leaned over his quaking body with my foot pressing down on his chest, making it hard for him to breathe. "It's people like you that just make my life exciting." I rolled my eyes in disgust as I steadied my hands on his neck. With a quick movement of my wrists he was finished. As I stood up, I heard a gasp behind me. I quickly turned around only to find Trayce. Trayce Evans. He grabbed my shoulders and threw me against the wall, pinning me for only a second. For I am stronger than him and I swung around, putting him in the position he put me in.
"You killed that man!" He shouted. I could see the fear in his eyes. It shined like a bright light in a dark basement, and trust me I've seen a lot of those.
I shook my head and began to speak soflty, "Dear, he was a monster." I started to let go of him thinking maybe he had a hold of himself.. but I was wrong. He shoved at me, but I pushed him back to the wall. "He killed all those kids, Trayce. All those kids from the paper." I grabbed an article from my pocket and held it up slowly. "This little girl, she was 5!" Then I held up another. "This young man, 10" I continued pulling papers from my pocket "This little cutie, she was 6 and these twins right here, 7" Pain and sorrow crossed over his face and I knew he was thinking about Ben, his 10 year old son. I slowly let go of him as I spoke, "If I wouldn't have killed him, your son Ben could have been next in line."
"...You know, he's yours too.." Those words made me freeze. Those 5 little words right there. I stared at the ground, my heart feeling as if it had dropped to the ground. "You're the one that left us, Dawn.. why?"
"I left for protection.. I didn't want you to see this, what I do. I learned at a young age to never make emotional connections. But I did. And I love you, Trayce. And I love Ben. But I can die at any moment in my life. Or someone like Zazarus can come and put the ones I love like you in danger."
"What exactly do you do.." He asked slowly as if he wasn't sure he wanted to know.
"I hunt, Trayce. I hunt jerks like those. You see he, it wasn't human, it was a Shtriga. Gross little suckers they are. They are creatures that feeds off of Children's lifeforce. And it doesn't stop there. All those monsters from your childhood, the monster in your closet and under your bed. Real. And I protect people's lives by stopping them in their tracks. Killing them and sending them back to Hell." I took a deep breath and stared at the ground before letting him go and slowly took his hand in mine and began to walk.
From here on, no more keeping secrets from those I love. I have been absent enough from Trayce's life. From Ben's life. "I'm sorry..." I whispered, "I'm sorry."
