Part 10

My shift ends and I drive back to Garrett's apartment. I drag my feet to his apartment as I feel the hallway won't come to an end. I knock on the door as I hear a woman's laughter. The door opens and it's Milo who is smiling wide. I give a small smile back and step in.

"Hey," I say.

"Hey," he looks back, "just on the dot."

"I am a woman of my word," I walk in and see Garrett and Evie cuddled up against the couch.

"Oh, how cute," I tease under my breath. Milo nudges his elbow into mine as I walk towards the living room. Garrett looks up and smiles as he holds a bottle of beer.

"Hey!"

I just wave as Evie waves back. All I could attempt to do is gulp down the awkwardness I feel in this room.

"I'll get Clyde," she says warmly as she stands up and disappears down the hall. I look and see I'm with the Caster boys alone. I bite the inside of my lip.

"How was he?" I ask, not sure who to face.

"Oh, he was fine. Quiet, little fellow," Garrett smiles at me as he sets his beer down.

"Yeah, he's pretty quiet," I smile.

"But quite a chatter box to Milo."

"Well, I think that's fair," Milo shrugs.

Evie comes in the room holding Clyde who is half awake in her arms. She gently passes him to me as I hold him and fix the back of his hair as he rests against my shoulder. I smile at Evie and look at the clock.

"Well, I should go," I say. "And thank you so much for offering to babysit him while I was at work."

"Oh, no, thank you for allowing us to watch him. You two are welcomed here any time," Evie says as she lays a hand on my shoulder.

"I'll walk you out," Milo says as Evie backs away.

"Bye," I say while Milo opens the door for me. I begin to walk out, hearing the door shut behind me as Milo walks beside me.

"How was he really?" I ask.

"Quiet, talked when he needed to. Really Haze, he wasn't bad at all."

"I mean with your brother and Evie, did he seem... uncomfortable?"

"Well, I think he was trying to warm up to them, and I think me being there helped him."

"Good, good," I breathe out.

We reach my car and I carefully put Clyde in his seat. I close the door and see Milo look at him intently through the window.

"Well, I have to go. Are you coming around tomorrow? I have the day off."

"Um... I'll text you."

"Alright," my face turns red. I walk and get in my car. Milo waves good bye as he jogs back into the building. I start my car and sit in it looking at my texts from Jocelyn and my sister. A knock is planted on my window and I see Garrett. I roll down the window as he smiles.

"Something wrong?" I ask.

"You forgot this," Garrett hands me the bag filled with Clyde's toys and food and books.

"Oh, thank you," I sigh and toss it on the passengers seat.

"And I want to tell you personally that Clyde is such a great kid. I see a lot of you in him, you're doing great, Haze."
