CALYPSO AT AGE 5

"Mommy why do the other kids not like me?" I asked my mother. Mother smiled her beautiful smile and pulled me up on her lap as we sat and watched the ocean. "Calypso Do you know why I named you Calypso?" She asked me rocking me back and forth. I wasn't sure what that had to do with my question but I answered anyway. "You named me after the first Calypso right?" I asked Mother smiled and gazed out at the sea. "Yes but do you know why?" She asked to which I replied "No"

"I named you after her because I pitied her." She said confused I looked at her waiting for her to further explain. "The stories you hear from the villagers are lies, She was not bad she was simply lonely. punished for a crime her family committed. she must be Forever alone. That is how she must always be. Falling in love with someone who can never stay with her. For that I pitied her, no one, No one should be with out their true love. and so I named you after her in hopes that when you found your true love, a little bit of that happiness can be shared with her through you. I wanted to prove the gods wrong." she said with a slight bitterness at the end. I understood why. Mother's true love, my father had been taken away from us by illness. No matter how much we offered and prayed to the gods, he still left. After that Mother grew to hate the gods, she just couldn't fully believe in them anymore, and I doubted their existence. "The children do not hate you My darling, they avoid you, they are too afraid to go against the gods. But You my child, will never truly be alone. You will always have love. You will prove the gods wrong. Remember that Calypso."

and then she grew sick. And no matter what we did, or how much we prayed nothing worked. And then I was alone.

PRESENT CALYPSO AGE 16

"There she goes." "You mustn't talk about her you're defying the gods, she is to be forever alone."

"I bet the gods killed her mother and father because they tried to defy them." I rolled my eyes at the pointless gossips. Illness killed my family, not gods. I calmly walked down the dirt path heading no where, I was use to the usual gossip that followed my presence. "One may almost feel important the way I can turn a room silent." I muttered to myself. I had thought about leaving this place before, going to some far off land, but my parents were here, that and no ferry-man will allow me on their passage. So I am still here, and still very much alone. I glanced at the children playing in the field near by and couldn't help but smile. I loved kids but I doubt id ever have any. I was pulled from my thoughts as a ball rolled in front of me. A small boy quickly started after it until he saw me. Fear and uncertainty flashed through his gaze and he hesitated. I smiled at him before looking around and gently kicking him the ball. He smiled and waved before running off. "HIGHER!" startled at the sudden boom of the voice of the high priest I turned to find a few of the village boys holding a large banner and the priest conducting them on its placement. "That's perfect RIGHT THERE!" he boomed again, it was no wonder he was the high priest. "The year of the sea." I whispered the words on the sign, I had almost forgotten, but how could I? its time to find the next sacrifice. "this should be interesting.."  I whispered before returning to my walk. I sighed in content at my solitude, sometimes it was nice, or at least one grows used to it, to appreciate it instead. I quickly entered the forest and ran into an elderly woman. "Can you help me?" i was startled as she had spoken to me. Usually no one speaks to me but i listened and realized she was blind. "I only wished to take a walk but I lost my way" i nodded before grabbing her hand and silently leading her out and back to the village. I sent her off near some houses allowing a few of the village women to take her as they gave me their best dirty looks. Sighing I quickly returned to my forest, finding my tree. I grabbing the end of my dress I climbed the tree basket in hand. Finally reaching my branch I sat the basket on it before pulling myself up the rest of the way. I quickly settled it and stared out at the beautiful scenery. This spot, my spot was the best on the whole island, it on looked the entire ocean revealing waterfalls through large almost immeasurable trees. It was simply beautiful, and no one ever came here. In the past I would have longed for a friend to come here with me, not anymore. I quickly opened my basket revealing snacks and a few books. Pulling one out I began to read and soon, slipped into a peaceful sleep...at first.

'Calypso," I opened my heavy eyes and looked around only to find I was no longer in my spot but rather in some form of water. I was standing and I could breath but I was definitely in the ocean. my long hair floated around me, and schools of fish swam by quickly. Although this should have scared me I wasn't shocked, I was calm about it all. "Calypso" I turned toward the direction of the voice and found a strange light. Slowly I walked towards the light reaching towards it. there was something strange about it, it wasn't coming from the sky like the others and it wasn't shining up from the sea bottom it was dead center of the water. As I stepped closer and closer it grew warmer and warmer. "Calypso.."  suddenly a figure replaced the light. her long brown hair floating around her like my own. "Hello?" My voice sounded so far away. one last step and I was directly in front of her. Slowly she turned around and I found standing before me, was me. Same wavey light brown hair, same blue eyes, same everything. She smiled at me before resting her hand against my cheek. It wasn't me, it was my mother.  Her face suddenly aged and it was the same as I remembered her. "Mom.." tears formed in my eyes. She stepped back and I stepped forward but was stopped as she placed a hand out in front of me. My eyes raced to hers but hers showed content and a smiled formed on her face, a calm smile, one I hadn't seen in years. Hands out of nowhere shot out and grabbed me. Holding my arms, I couldn't move. then mom stepped back smile still there. She wrapped her hands together and pulled them to her face almost in prayer. She smiled keeping her eyes on me. Her mouth moved forming silent words. Then she closed her eyes, and fell back. "MOM!"

"MOM!" I jumped awake. only to find I once again was not in my spot, I was being carried on a mat by several masked men. my heart stopped...I knew what this meant. "No it cant be me...Let me off. LET ME OFF!"

"I cant be the sacrifice.."
