The next morning I woke up early and began to get ready. When I finished I grabbed my keys and wallet, and went outside. As I locked the door I didn't exactly know where I was going, but it beat staying home. When I got into my car I turned the ignition. As I waited for the car to warm up my phone rang. I didn't recognize the number, but I answered anyway.
"Hello?", I asked confused.
"Sam? Yeah, it's Mike; Can you come to the Brew? I have an idea for the project.", he said.
"S-sure I was going that direction anyway", what was wrong with me. I needed to stop sounding like an idiot.
"Cool. See you there, bye."
Then the line cut off. Suddenly I felt butterflies in my stomach. I couldn't wait to see Mike.
The Brew looked more dead than usual, but I didn't mind, hopefuly I wouldn't see Trista holding a leash around Mike. I walked inside and ordered a small latte. Right when I sat down, Mike walked in. I waved at him and he came and sat next to me.
"How long have you been waiting?", he asked.
"A few minutes."
"Okay, well I have an idea for the project. Maybe we can do a 3-D model or the pulmonary system with moving parts.", he said.
"Yea, thats a good idea. Well, now that I have an idea of what we are doing we can go ahead and buy what we need.", I said.
Mikes eyes darted back and forth.
"Or would Trista get mad?", I asked kinda annoyed. Mike looked at me as if to tell me yes. I felt bad for snapping at him.
"I'm sorry Mike, I didn't mean to intrude.", I said apologetically.
"No, no its not your fault. It's fine, Trista will understand.", he said trying to dodge what I just said.
We both got up and walked outside and Mike told me we could just go to Target since it was the closest. Also adding that I could just ride with him.
I opened the door and sat in his car immediately catching a whiff of body-spray and sweat. As gross as it may sound, it didn't smell bad, it was more intoxicating than anything. When Mike turned on the radio a RHCP (A/N RHCP stands for Red Hot Chili Peppers) song and I started mouthing the lyrics. Mike looked at me and smiled brightly.
"You know this band?", he asked suprised.
"Yes, I love this band", I said.
"Wow..", he said, obviously speechless.
"What do you think I listen to? The Jonas Brothers?", I asked sarcastically.
Mike laughed and seemed to relax more. As we got out of the car I felt a huge gust of wind blow making me shiver, and my hair fly everywhere.
"Can I borrow these?", I asked Mike holding a grey beanie and black jacket.
"Sure", he said with a smile.
I put on the beanie trying to keep my hair matted as much as possible. We rushed to get all the supplies we needed. On many occasions our hands touched, but we would pull back immediately. As we were driving away from the store I noticed Mike smiling at nothing in paticular.
"Whats wrong?", I asked.
"You're a lot more different than most of the girls at school", he said.
"Umm, is that bad?", I asked kind of afraid of his answer.
"No, no, it's really good, I meant it as a compliment.", he said hoping I didn't take it the wrong way.
"Oh.."
"So Sam, do you have a boyfriend?", he poked my arm.
My heart kind of sunk when I thought about it. The only boyfriend I ever had was Sean, and that relationship blew up in my face. He had only dated me for a bet; the prize? 20 bucks. I was suddenly broken out of my trance when i heard the guitar solo blaring from the radio.
"Umm, no I was in a bad relationship and I dont know if I could trust a guy again."
"Who's the guy? And what did he do?", he asked almost immediately after.
I didn't say anything to Mike, contemplating wether I should tell him what happened with Sean or not. There was silence between us and I could feel the tension growing.
"I'm sorry Sam, it's okay if you dont wanna tell me. I understand", he said kind of half-heatedly.
"N-n-no it's okay Mike. I dated Sean, Sean Johnson. He um, dated me for a bet", I said looking at my hands, fumbling with my fingers.
"Sean?! What an ass! Sam, I'm so sorry if I stepped out of place."
"It's okay, like you said he's just an ass, nothing more."
Mike gave me an apologetic look. We pulled up to the Brew and i unbuckled my seat belt. As I opened the door to get out he grabbed my arm; my heart leaped so fast I feared it was going to come out of my chest.
"Um Sam, tonight I'm having a party, I know it's short notice, but I was wondering if you wanted to come.", Mike said still holding my arm.
"S-sure, I'll be there", I said with a smile. Of course I stuttered like an idiot.
Mike smiled back, looking at me with those mezmorizing sapphire blue eyes. I smiled back suddenly feeling self-conscious about how I looked. I got out of his car and walked to mine. I got in, started the ignition and drove home. On my way home I realized I wanted to be with Mike, but I was also torn due to my past with relationship. But there was something about Mike, something that told me he wasn't like Sean or any other guy for that matter. Mike was different. And I needed that, someone different.
