Today was Valentine’s Day, and any other lucky teenage girl would have been out with their boyfriend, sucking each other’s faces off like there was no tomorrow. Or maybe a normal girl would be bawling their eyes out watching The Notebook or some other corny movie that was way too cliché to be true. They would also be whining about how they hadn’t been asked by anyone to be the Valentine with their friends who weren’t asked either. Or even maybe a normal teenage girl wasn’t doing anything at all, and treating today like any other day because she didn’t give a flying unicorn that today was Valentine’s Day.

But who was I to say that I was normal, or even lucky?

My abnormal self was already cursed with the bad luck of having Jason as a best friend. And guess what? The legendary Jason had gotten himself sick with the fever, and guess who had to take care of him today?

None other than me.

If you were wondering if Jason was over the whole scenario about me taking the note, he most definitely wasn’t.

“I’m here!” I shouted, as I closed the door. “Where is everyone?”

“Here, darling!” Jason’s mother called from upstairs.

I followed her voice and it led me to inside her room, where she was currently getting dressed. She looked exactly how a secretary should, in her high waisted skirt that reached to her knees, blue blouse and her black heels.

“Thank you so much for coming, honey. I have absolutely no idea what I would do without you,” she began, putting on her pearl earrings. “Eddie will be by around 9:30. Iris is at school, but don’t worry. I have a friend picking her up, and Kyle is… Well, Kyle is somewhere and you know where the food is.”

“Okay,” I chuckled, “Got it.”

“Call me if you need anything. Love you, hon. Tell Jason I left. Bye!” she farewelled.

I heard the door shut downstairs, and the house was filled with an unusual silence. Jason’s house was rarely ever quiet. It was always filled with vibrant sounds and so much energy. That was why I loved being here so much. The house being silent just seemed peculiar.

I snapped out of my thoughts about the house and snuck to Jason’s room to see if he was awake. He was still asleep, so I decided to head downstairs to make him some soup.

Bringing out a pot, I gingerly placed it on the stove, added some water, chicken, carrots, pepper, broccoli and other vegetables that Jason absolutely hated. I went over to watch some TV, while I waited for the soup to finish cooking.

‘Hey, you sure you don’t want me to cancel on Kolby?’ read the text message I received from Rosie.

‘No. Trust me; I already have my hands full today.’

‘Okay, catch you later girlfriend (:’

I laughed quietly at her message then went to check on Jason’s soup after half an hour had gone by. Seeing that it was ready, I put some in a bowl, grabbed a spoon and headed upstairs to Jason’s room.

He was still asleep, so as quietly as I could, I tip-toed into his room and placed the bowl down on his dresser.

I tried sneaking out of his room before I woke him up, but I found myself standing there and staring at him. His face that was always so colorful and vibrant seemed to have partly paled, but still showed a hint of its natural color. His lips were slightly chapped, most likely from the dehydration of having a fever. The only thing that seemed exactly the same about him was his hair. He still had that ‘I just woke up and I’m too cool to fix my hair’ sort of look.
