Every year they went.

Every year Alex and his family would go to the cabin by the ocean for his birthday, it was a tradition that had been going on for fifteen years. A tradition he was very fond of, after all, he loved the ocean more than anything, it was beautiful and fascinating in ways he couldn't explain.

"Honey stop spacing out and help us bring the things in."

His mother's voice snapped him from the thoughts running through his head and jogged over to his father to gather the cooler from his arms as he mouthed an incoherent 'Yes your majesty.'

"Come on Jean, I don't blame him for staring. I could watch the sea all day."

His father said jokingly as he patted Alex in the back and flashed his frowning wife a grin before turning back to the car truck to retrieve the bags.

His mother shook her head before turning her head in his direction. "Go take that in Al. We've got enough lazy people out here with your father around."

Alex shook his head quietly before turning too there cabin and striding away from his parents friendly bickering. He didn't want too be unpacking, he wanted to be on the sand and in the water. He loved the ocean and wanted to be as close to it as he could.

Wind ruffled his black hair as he slid the front door closed and he slid into the cabin. His eyes scanned quickly through the house before coming upon the table and placing the cooler on top of it. As soon as he placed it down he was heading for the back door and going for the wood stairs that went down to the beach.

Excited grey eyes flew over the great blue waves and the amazing rocks that twisted and turned. Nothing had changed, even the small cave was still there. Alex loved that cave, when he had finally turned ten his father had decided he was old enough to go in, it had become his secret hide out for the next five years.

"Alex!"

The boy turned swiftly at the sound of his name.

"Come on kiddo, we're gonna start dinner."

His father took two steps at a time as he said this before he came too stand in front of him. He nodded before beginning too make his way back up with his father, attempting to forget that he had felt eyes on him as soon as he stepped onto the sand.

...

Alex slid under the covers of his bed as his mom clicked of the light and whispered a quiet goodnight before going of to join his father for bed.

Restless and exited for what he had been waiting for all year he couldn't help but stay on his side and stare out his window at the moon lit ocean, its waves gently rolling back and forth calmly. Biting his lip   he looked at his bedroom door before slipping out of bed and heading over to the sliding door in  his room.

Casting one more glance at his bedroom door he slid out the door, closing it quietly behind him before  walking across the sand with bare feet and only his sleeping shorts and shirt on. His feet lightly danced down the stairs going down to the beach as he practically ran across the sand to get his feet in the water, calm instantly drifting over him like a blanket at the feeling of the water on his skin.

He waded in the water for hours, running his fingers over the silk like surface and running from the waves. This was a place that always made him happy, ever since he'd been a child when he had barely been able to walk. He smiled as he sat on the sand panting silently and catching his breath as he watched the waves and listened to them splash in the silence.

A noise interrupted the quiet, catching him off guard as his head snapped up to a cave on one side of the beach not so far from them. When he'd been a child his father hadn't allowed him to explore it because of when it was high tide there was no ground to walk on.

The noise went off again and he flinched, it sounded like chunks of meat being ripped apart and torn. It echoed through the cave, carrying all the way to him.
